Hood Safety Latch W126

Have replaced the hood on the 300SD (thanks daw-two). fits like a glove. The used hood did not have a safety latch - or the cut out and holes for a safety latch. Was this common for a previous 85SD version? The hood is snug and pops up nicely with the cabin latch. Should I have concerns?

It was from a gasser right? I believe the gas V8s had the safety latch on the side, the diesels have the little pull thing on the grille.

Our 81 300SD has the safety latches on the sides instead of the grille pull.

ALL W126's have the side hood latches, only the W123/W124 have it in the grille.

I've seen some W126s with the hood release in the grille.

Mmm. 81 500SE has safety latch on top (grille) like the 85 SD and 86 SDL.
It's not an issue to drill two holes and swap safety latches, that's probably the best think to do Don't want to have the "My hood popped up going down the interstate" thread

My 85SD has the grill latch. The safety alone wasn't enough to hold & hood flew up at approx 40mph. Hood wasn't properly latched.

My 84 300SD had them on the side and my 85 has it coming out of the grill. A safety latch is important and you will understand when it blows up on the highway.

Good luck

Why would they be different on different W126's....that makes no sense.

I've seen same models of the same year have varying latches. It is indeed weird.

Both hoods are Aluminum

Well - its a moot point now it has the old latch mounted. Figure they put it there for a reason.

To my knowledge:
The first generation w126s have the releases on the sides of the grille

The second generation w126s have the release inside the grill (pull-out style), like the w201/124

My two 82SD's are on the sides, my 420SEL is in the grille, as is my friends 90' SE/SELs.
