MPG-1983 240D, 152,000 miles

I was able to get what amounts to over 500 miles on a tank when I bought the car. I adjusted the valves, and my mileage dropped, and probably took a few thousand miles to get back to where it was when the valves were too tight.

I am getting 33 MPG on the highway now if I keep my speed between 55-65. Around town, which means taking a 1 mile trip here and there, I can be as low as 24 MPG. Generally, I get 400 per tank around town and well over 500 on the road.

Of course good valve adjustment affects the mileage, but I am inclined to believe that an engine that has not lost any compression will be more important when it comes to good mileage.

1993 Euro spec 300d.

I love these cars. My current one is a 1993 6 cyl W124 300D. Brought directly from Germany to New Zealand and I am the second owner. Never old in the US. Non turbo.
I have run 100% biodiesel for the last 2 + years totally unaltered. No modifications whatsoever. I change the fuel filter every 10,000 kms and that is all in nearly 200,000kms. My mileage is simply amazing. The gearing is different in this vehicle designed for long haul. Factory. My best long haul is just under 47mpg and around town approx 32 mpg. No repairs just filters and fluids.

1995 E300D MPG

High MPG - 31.4
Low MPG - 27.0
Average - 29.1

I keep up with the mileage with the app GAS CUBBY.

146k miles 100% new suspension. This is consistent with my previous 1995 E300D that I personally put over 350K on.

I have owned 3 W123's and they all were in the 23 MPG range. I'm a salesman in eastern SC (flat and at sea level).

Miles???

I used to get just over 750km out of a tank full. 78 300D sedan. Obviously a lot less than the 12.5 L/100Km as stated in the handbook. That was babying it a bit but still doing 100Kph down the highway etc. Unfortunately I don't know what miles or gallons is.....

My 2 newer Diesels, VW Jetta TDi and Peugeot 307 HDi get 4.9 and 6 L/100Km. Peugeot has a real automatic with torque converter but I will try it on a 300km trip soon to see if I can get it down to the claimed lower consumption level.

My E300D (with 200,000 miles on the clock) runs about 10 litres/100km generally around town and local running, 8.0 on a good motorway run at the speed limit here in France, 130km/hr.
I guess that's about 28mpg UK / 24 USA and 35mpg UK / 30 US.

My 82 300TD wagon loaded with 200-300lbs of tools gets an ave of 23 around town consistently with my lead foot, I haven't had it on the highway yet to speak of, last tank I got 24.8 on long winding back roads.

'93 300d here, 198k miles,
Summer mileage is great, usually average 30-33 with most trips being my 8 mile urban route to work. On road trips where speed is constant around 50-70 all day it can reach high 30s. Broke 40 once, but that was a one time deal.
Winter is generally about 15-20% worse.
Fresh air filter helps a lot I've found. As does good oil and a quality oil filter. Also, in my experience, the combustion chambers like to leak which is bad for gas mileage. If you're buying for good gas mileage, have a compression check done before you buy or at least look for diesel goo around the injectors. Cost is about $150-200 per cylinder to have them resealed.
