Oil leaking at base of injector

I seem to have oil leaking from the base of the #1 and #2 injectors of the 617 in my 300SD.

I've searched through the few related threads on this topic so let me head off all the very disbelieving questions everyone else got:

1) I degreased the entire engine and drove it for ten minutes and it's spotless except for this black substance that looks nothing like fuel that is coming from the base of the injector.
2) Yes, it's oil, not fuel.
3) No, it's not coming from the valve cover, it's definitely coming from the base of the injector.

I've attached a picture of each one. #1 is clearly leaking worse than #2.

I swapped out my injectors recently, so I assume that must be where this issue originated. Does anyone know the specifics? Not enough torque when reinstalling them? Heat shield not sealed properly? Something else?

Thanks.

How old are the fuel return lines?

Did you install NEW heat shields in all pre-chambers?
(After making a count of all FIVE old REMOVED Heat Shields?)

[How HARD was it to "Break Loose" the Injectors?]

I have the same problem with #2 injector. Not much of a leak -been leaking for over two years - slowly. Have not bothered the injector; have replaced the return fuel line, although I am certain that it is not the line.

Fuel return lines (it's not a fuel leak ) and heat shields are all new of course. The injectors came out easily enough, but the wrench I use for that is gigantic so they didn't really have much say in the matter . I don't think they were particularly tight.

what size heat shield did you use? (big hole, small hole)

did you install new nozzles?

were your injectors dirty or eroded at the tip?

my bet.
you have oil leaking from somewhere, and you got it in the pc threads. clean it again and again. it'll stop. if you have new shields, and you got out all the old shields, and your injector's threads and the PC threads are clean, then there isn't really anyplace for oil to originate from.
give it a week, drive a while, you will find where the oil was coming from.

There's more than one size heat shield? I used whatever Fastlane sells; they looked identical to the old ones (here).

The nozzles are new, injectors were clean.

Oh, there was oil everywhere before I cleaned and degreased the hell out of the engine today . If that was the case you'd think the other injectors would look that way too. But I'll give it a shot.

I think vstech is right, here.

it makes no sense for oil to originate from this region.

most likely the prechambers are leaking a little compression, which is common. This is forcing the oily gunk out of the region around the prechambers and onto the head.

wipe it away, and check again.

vstech wins the thread! I had to wash it off five or six times but it appears to have stopped now.

For others Reading the Thread:
Liquids can seep though an pool in the threaded areas between the Injector threads and the Prechamber Ring/Collar threads and above the Heat Shield in the Red outlined area in the diagram.
