Temp Gauge Confirmed Off by 20 Degrees

Yesterday I took reading off T-Stat housing and had low 80C ratings (Mid 80's weather) while factory gauge reported 100C! I am less worried now about overheating but did order a new temp sender after cleaning old one with no change. I also ran a new ground in instrument panel which did not affect gauge but did relight my tach side lights finally. Has anyone on this site had a positive result after installing new temp sender ('82 300sd)? If sender does not work, I may find a donor gauge somewhere and see how that goes - all grounds were also cleaned and tightened on this car as well . . yes, I am obsessing . . .

I went through the same issues as you when I installed my new engine. thing seemed to be running 100c. I thought being new it was tight and making it run hotter. I also put in a new Behr radiator and all new hoses.

I swaped the wires on the 2 sensors on the side of the head to see if i had a bad sensor.
finally replaced the sensor with a new one.

Even changed the gage for a spare I had, twice. all read the same temp

Finally bought a IR Temp Lazer gun. every place I took a reading, temps were normal.

Later on down the road a few thousand miles, I was having a jumpy temp gage. thing would suddenly peg to the top. that will make you hart jump in your throat. start eng back up and it would be normal, then jump up.

Problem was the eng to body ground strap. paint on the eng didn`t give it a good ground.

It still seems to run 1/2 way to 100c now, so must be the nature of the thing.
I even changed the stat. now I run one from a SLC, think it is set for 75c.

I always carry my lazer gun on trips with my 240D, after a few hours driving the gauge starts reading high.

With a 20 degree difference Id start by confirming your external meter is reading right. A just beginning to boil water pot is a good target.

212F or 100C should be read.
