Need some clarity - tach (from a 300d) on 240d?

I'm trying to synthesize the "tach on a 240d" threads I've read. They all leave me a little confused so I thought I'd just ask it in a straightforward way. So. Am I right if I believe something like:

"Sure you can put a tach on a 240d. Just take a gauge cluster from a 300d, snake the tach/clock from it, and replace the clock on the 240d with it. As long as it's '81 or later, you run a couple leads from the tach to the appropriate pins on the EGR computer and bada-BOOM! Tach!"

¡Muchas gracias!

Nope, pretty sure you can't do just that. The sensor is on the front of the engine on my '81 617.951. EGR stands for Exhaust Gas Recirculation, which is vacuum operated and has nothing to do with engine speed. I'm sure there is some way to rig up a sensor, but it's definitely not that easy. You'd also need the tach amp.

I wrote a how to post with photos on how to run a tach off of the EGR computer. Your 240D must have an EGR computer and a mag pickup for it to work. My 240D is now a parts car but it's tach setup has been sold to a forum member and lives on in his 240D.

Funola,
Thanks for your DIY. I already got the tach from 300D and will try to install it in my '82 240D this week. Wish me luck!

Aha! I found that pictorial. Very sweet! I'd LOVE to do the same to my '82. I just don't know anything about the pickup. Is it the case that if I have an EGR computer (controller) I necessarily have the requisite pickup and, therefore, only have a few electrical connections to make? Or, is it possible that I have the ER computer, but no pickup? If that is the case, how do I know whether or not I've got the pickup?

Thanks again! I'm definitely pursuing this one!
