more progress

I connected the compressor to the manifold in the car (no mounting bolts). When I took off the test manifold, got pressure release which is good.

I pumped up the system to 50 psi on the low side port and it is holding pressure. No leaks in the system!

I will leave it pressurized overnight. The 1 qt. of mineral oil is not here yet. Once it gets here, I will flush the compressor with it then flush the rest of the system and evac and charge.

This has to be the wackiest set of A/C pics ever.

Compressors on boards w/ washing machine motors, hand pumps to pressurize the system.

You are the MacGyver of Climate Control.

I accept the title bestowed upon me.

It's making do with what's available. Better than trial and error.

Just test fitted the new compressor o-rings and they are too thin and too big in diameter! I have no choice but to re- use the old ones. I will take them out with a bone awl, boil them in hot water to swell them and look at them under a magnifier and make sure they are smooth with no nicks before putting them back.

Hold on there with the O-rings. Are you sure you don't need sealing washers? Didn't you read my treatise on the CompressorWorks R4 install?

What's the diameter and depth of the recesses? If I had to guess, I'd say 28 mm x 2 mm.

I think you've got a Harrison compressor, right? The one I took out of my car was a Harrison HR100T and used the "black" sealing washers. Two, equal diameter, about 3 mm think. I've got two unused spares. You want?

PM me ASAP, cause I'm out of town after Wed.

MacGyver would find a local rubber tree and make his own...

Mine is the GM Delco R4, 2 black o-rings of the same diameter. I'll measure and post dimensions in an hour or so. Sounds like you have what I need. Supposedly R4's made since early 80's do not use o-rings, and have gone to the stepped seals, which does a better job sealing alledgedly.

You folks can laugh all you want. But I used the same red-neck jury rig "junk" tools in these pics to test and fix the AC in a VW (R134) a few months ago. Still blowing ice coooold!

yeah, we did a fine job getting that vw cooling well!
I still say it's a mistake to pressurize the system with compressed air. the solvent never removes everything, so adding moisture to the system is just asking for trouble!
get some nitrogen or co2 and use that!
for the flush as well as for pressure testing. avoid adding atmospheric pressure to the lines!

The black o-ring in the middle is what came out of the Delco R4. The 2 green ones are ones I bought. Note they are bigger diameter and thinner than the
black one? The recess in the R4 for the o-ring measured out to be 27 mm od, 20.5 mm i.d

go to the parts counter, and ask to see a GM replacement compressor. look in the box and ask if you can have the orings from the box.

Yeah John talked me through the charging process on the VW so I don't screw up and waste precious freon. Thanks again John! It really helps to have someone who knows what they're doing talking you through.

Yeah I know it's a no no to use air to pressure test. But since the system was already at atmospheric and full of air what the heck? Shouldn't the evac at 29" HG remove all the moisture? Ok maybe there's a few molecules left but I'll be using ES12A (unless Larry Bible send me some R12 ) which is immune to moisture supposedly.

O-rings are history in newly manufactured R4's. Per Compressor Works, none of their R4's use o-rings. They all use sealing washers for the "stepped ports" and are not included with the compressor because they are application specific and of different thicknesses and color coded.

What do your green ones measure out to be?

If you've bot a no kidding O-ring groove, then disregard the offer of the sealing rings. It's a completely different product.

But...in my vain and underinformed attempt to seal up my compressor, I bought the Santech MT2554 O-ring kit, for GM compressors circa 92-04. In that kit are two green O-rings od 27 x id 22 (x 2.5 cross section, for the math impaired).

http://www.autozone.com/autozone/parts/Santech-A-C-System-O-Ring-Kit/_/N-91tam?itemIdentifier=529596_0_0_

You may be able to buy them by themselves. Yeah, it's an M-B, but that's a GM compressor, so shop in the GM aisle.

If this is what you need, get on down to your local AutoZone, or other nearby chain store and buy them. I've seen the O-rings spec'd by cross section and id, so you could be looking for a 3 x 21, or the 2.5 x 22 depending on the depth of the groove. I looked on a O-ring site and didn't see a 3 x 21 except for rocket seals. It does exist, but it's less common than the 2.5 x 22.

It's a very fat o-ring. more like 3.25 x 20.5 by the convention you're using.
The black o-ring in the pic actually looks pretty good after I boiled it, smooth with no nicks, not flattened or crushed. It was made with some good rubber in it's day. This o-ring came from the bad R4. There are 2 more in the good R4 which is in the car being pressure tested. They are holding pressure but I'd take them out to let them stretch out a bit then inspect them and put them back in if I can't find exact replacements.

My new compressor works compressor (thanks for the tip YAK) came with the sealing washers. It came with three, two of which I used.
