How do I "fool" my alternator into charging?
I transplanted a 300TD engine into another vehicle. I'm not sure how to wire the "extra" lead that would normally go to the not-charging light on the dash, so that the alternator will charge.
I'm familiar with the Saab alternator upgrade, but I need something to work with the stock alternator for now. Just FYI, there was almost nothing left of the 1983 wagon that the engine came out of. Salted roads gutted the body. Thanks for your input! |

Welcome to the forum!
We hope that you find out all you need to know about your car ! Wire the extra through a small globe back to the ignition ( after the switch). Dont you have an idiot (ignition) light in the new car? Hope that helps Good Luck!!

I made the below Alternator Test Cord up; in a simplified way it duplicates the circuit going to the Alternator.
You need a least a 3 watt Bulb in the circuit or your Alternator may not get excited enough to charge. The thin Blue wire is the one that the Light Bulb needs to be hooked to and you would need something to disconnect the electricity to the light bulb when the Engine is turned off; as said previously the Ignition Switch.

Thanks for the replies. I ended up wiring a bulb to:
Lead #1 Ignition-Hot Lead #2 Alternator (excite) I did have to wire an LED (diode) to the circuit to prevent feedback when ignition was turned off. Roy |
