Is this bad? [617 Motor Mounts/Leak]

Hey everyone,

I was helping my buddy with his Jeep today and I noticed a lovely puddle on the flood under my 300SD:

(image will get larger if you click)

Its red, and the ps reservoir is full, so that points to transmission. However this puddle is a good distance from the transmission itself. So I'm not sure. It might be transmission cooler lines...

I also spotted this:
Driver Side Motor Mount
(image will get larger if you click)

That looks bad? Is it?

Here is the passenger side as well:

Thoughts?

From what you tell us it's probably the cooler lines as you surmise. Clean them with brake parts cleaner and rags, then run it and see where the fluid is coming from. It usually just seeps through the rubber and you'll find faster leaks where the rubber hose is crimped to the steel lines. Sometimes the rubber line cracks through, though. Pressure washing the whole underside with engine cleaner or Simple Green can help you find it also. Looks like it's blowing around while you drive.
Someone with an SD will chime in about your motor mounts. The manual gives a procedure to check them but I only have the 124 manual now.

James,
I had a problem with the trans cooler hard lines. The brackets didnt have the rubber bits any more so they vibrated away. Over time this caused the hard line to ware away & then while doing an oil change I moved it & it cracked. Its likely you have a damaged hard line. As a quick fix you could place a piece of hose over the crack (leak) & clamp the ends. This should be ok for a short while while you get your hands on a good replacement.

Your drivers side motor mount is well past its replacement date !! Order a new one ASAP !!!!

Good Luck !!

I'm not familiar with the 300SD setup of the 617, but I can tell you that you may want to replace that mount.

On my 300D I replaced both mounts after I replaced the oil cooler lines. The driver's side mount was fine. Not collapsed and probably could be used again.

However, if the mount on the driver's side fails and starts to collapse. The belt from the AC compressor can rub against the rubber oil cooler lines and start to saw it apart. This is very bad as you can lose all of your motor oil if you're driving at highway speed which will causes complete engine destruction.

My passenger side mount was rotting apart. It had been drenched in motor oil for years from a leak near the turbo. I cleaned the area and put the new mount on, but I can only guess how nasty it will get as I have yet to fix the leak.

Replacing the mounts as well as the differential and transmission mounts has been one of the best things I have ever done. Nice smooth driving, the car coasts better, and no more jolting when I turn the engine off!

Replace that mount FAST!

Don't let the engine mount go for long... These vehicles have three mounts that hold both the engine and transmission to the frame. You have only two good mounts at the moment (and maybe not even that - have you checked the mount at the rear of the transmission?) If one mount is shot, the odds are that the other is not long for this world. Not a terribly difficult job to replace - just MAKE SURE not to strip out the internal hex bolt holding the engine mount to the engine. They can be removed once stripped ( I did this) but it will involve much hammering, drilling, and swearing.

The A/C belt can cut the transmission cooler hose if the engnie drops far enough..

I'm fairly certain it's the power steering belt that cuts into the oil cooler lines, but whichever one it is, the devastating oil loss will kill your motor in a VERY short time! get that mount changed. and fix whatever fuel leak you have that's dumping fluid on the mount. be SURE to keep the metal shield on the mount, it's sooo tempting to remove it and not put it back... it prolongs the life of your mounts. keep it!

When I go to replace the mounts can I just beat that heat shield back into shape and reuse?

Additionally which brand should I use? I've heard stories. Corteco? Phoenix (OEM)? Lemfoerder? Meyle? Febi?

The Phoenix and Corteco mounts are the most expensive of the bunch.

That is a personal question.

I prefer to use FEQ, Lemfoerder, FEBI, PHOENIX and Corteco brands..

Alright, parts arrived today, two Corteco engine mounts, oil cooler lines, and some engine shocks.

I started to work on the driver side mount and realized I would be making a trip to the hardware store. The mount to engine bolt (M12) had fallen out and was missing.

So I removed the M12 from the passenger side, took out the engine shocks. Gonna need new rubber bushings for those guys. The upper mounts are ok, a little greasy but ok.

Got the passenger side mount out and a new one is laying in there ready to be mounted.

The driver side is a bit of a problem. I can get to the outer engine mount bolt but not so sure about the inside...do I have to get it from underneath? I figured you'd remove the heat shield and it'd be easy access however the heat shield DOES NOT want to come off the arm. I tried hitting it with a hammer (via a long screwdriver) and it didnt budge. Any advice?

I'm also replacing the oil cooler lines, any tips/hints would be welcome. I read someone removed the engine mount arm and that made it much easier? Thoughts?

As for the leak, it smells diesely to me. I'm not sure. I didnt see any obvious leaks of ATF under the car. I'm still going to replace the tranny cooler rubber lines..

As always, I appreciate your tips/hints.

Bolt Information:
2x M12x40
4x M8x18

Engine Shock Bushings
A1262410012
A1232410365

Thanks

Kris
