It's a joke. But seriously, I've shut off a 617 many times by sucking on a vacuum hose.

I've thought about taking the air metering box and turning it around backwards (so the air flow goes through the other way) and using a pin to hold the flap open with a pull cord to yank (letting the flap slam shut - it is spring loaded plus would have the suction of intake) as an emergency shut off to stop run-away diesel.
Cutting off air is a certain way of stopping the engine in all cases.

It IS easy to joke about whether sucking or yanking is the best way to shut off an engine.

???? There is no existing knob so how do you know it needs to be pushed? A pull cable is the best way to accomplish diesel interruptus.

I can just see it now,
you get pulled over on the highway, the trooper comes up to your car & says "please turn off your car & get out", You reply "ok I just have to suck on this". What do you think the trooper does next? ![]()

use a vac pump out of a central door lock system. Cheap, effective, still mercedes. Pushbutton to start, pushbutton to stop.

alot of diesels like our JD tractor or bobcats, even a 5.9 cummins, has an electric solinoid thats operated via the ignition. there made just for that function and made to be reliable.
We did used to have a couple if Iseki diesel tractors that both had an air choke butterfly. works well! And the most basic way to stop a runaway diesel like if the turbo let go or some kind of injection pump failure

Keep it simple
He doesn't want vacuum and doesn't know how or if possible to route and install a choke cable. Dollars to doughnuts that Unimog is a standard transmission. Want to kill the engine? Just put it into top gear and let the clutch out. How difficult is that?

On North American models, I believe this was only used on 4 cylinder diesels to 1975, however, in Europe, I believe it carried over to early 617's.

How about a hood release cable and handle assy from a W123? The dismantlers are full of them.

Or find an old one with a blown diaphragm and cut the vac cylinder open to reveal the "pin" actuator you need. Pull with a cable to shutoff the rack. Return it to the "ready" position with the spring around the pin. The clevis that attaches the two parts is just a simple right angle pin. Its probably LESS work that creating a linkage between the accelerator lever and some ground condition the DOESN'T affect the throttle The shutoff plunger is located at top back of the IP on a four bolt flanged plate. The engagement feature you need is already machined into the rack. All you need is a cable actuator to take the place of the vacuum piston on the shutoff cylinder.
