You'll need a 13 mm wrench/socket and the lug wrench handle to release the the serpentine belt tensioner assembly, a 15 mm wrench/socket to remove the two bolts which secure the alternator in position. You will need an 8 mm wrench/socket to remove the four screws securing any sound encapsulation panel into position below the engine if you are going to access/remove/install the alternator from below, which is the easiest way to accomplish the task.

Might also want to bring a prybar or a big screwdriver along with some penetrant (PB blaster, liquid wrench, WD-40 if you have them over there). My experience with alternators on these cars can be summed up in one word: STUCK. I've even bent the tensioner screw from trying to relieve tension and it wouldn't budge.

Your "experience" appears to be limited to vehicles that do not have the OM 603.961 or it's related family of engines.

The 60X engines do not use alternator mounts that either move or are adjustable! The alternator is simply bolted into place and there is a separate tensioner for the serpentine belt.

The first time may take 30 minutes, after that it might take half that. The only potential difficulty is when you remove and insert the uppermost bolt securing the alternator and only because the bolt is about 4" and you have to manuver the bolt head end in and around the visco fan blades assuming it's still in place.

I'd pack a voltage regulator. That might be all it needs. Philips head screwdriver is all you need for that after you disconnect the battery.

Hi Sixto.
Are they known for defective regulators?
If thats the case I might as well bring both with me just in case and a new belt while I'm at it.
Thanks again.
By the way does anyone know about these vehicles being involved in some sort of recall?
And what is the recall all about?
thanks again.

Regulators wear out, just like tires.
I read here, it's only the 87's that were recalled, but dig further. I thought both years had the same engine.

Dan,

The regulator is part of the alternator so a new or known good alternator will have a regulator you can try before doing more work -

I think the trap oxidizer was a US and possibly North America emission control measure. None of the few Euro 603 turbos I've seen had a trap. The Euro exhaust manifold is different from the US .96 and .970 exhaust manifold. There's no provision to fit a trap since the turbo attaches directly to the manifold collector. Kinda like this but without the EGR port -
