Is there such thing as a cheap mercedes diesel??
Well now that my 92 300d needs rebuilt injectors, it will be out of commision for a while, which means i will be driving the 6.0 liter chevy truck that gets 12mpg. Now since i am only 16, and dont have a job yet this is going to kill my mercedes repair funding. So I am considering buying a "cheap" piece of transportation until then, and sell once I trust my car again. But of course it has to be a diesel car. My question is that what are the chances that buying lets say a $500 running and driving mercedes that i will not have to dump a bunch of money into it just to get it to get me from point a to point b. Here are a few options i have found:
http://dayton.craigslist.org/cto/1872875826.html http://cincinnati.craigslist.org/cto/1875466827.html Let me know what you think, or if i should just suck it up and drive the gas guzzler... thanks zach

Just wondering, why does your 300D NEED injectors? I know clogged injectors can cause nailing (and extreme-long term damage) but haven't heard too many that are undrivable under this condition.

Also, why not spend the $500 on the injectors?? You're much better off repairing the car you already have.

once the extremely leaky delievery valves were replaced, all 5 injectors started leaking fuel very badly, from every point possible. I know i can reseal the, and what not, but the car has 200,xxx miles and im pretty confident in saying they are original, and could use an overhaul

except that a project like that will take me a while, and my only other option to drive is the truck. And being freshly liscensed, like any other teen I would like to be able to go places...

Short answer: No
Long Answer: I bought my first Mercedes at 16 for $450 and drove it until I got to college. If you're handy with a wrench and, more critically, there are several wrecking yards with Benz diesels in them, you can make a $500 car drive for a long time. It will however nickel and dime you for as long as you own it and that's not factoring in the time you will spend underneath it fixing the various maladies. Luckily most of the problems aren't terminal besides rust and keeping it at a tune where it goes from point A to B isn't too terribly hard. Looking at the two CL ads you have there, the 82 could potentially be a very good deal if it isn't too rusty. The 80 had a veggie conversion which could be a red flag depending how it was done.

well im looking into both right now and getting more info on both and i will definetely look at the veg conversion and see how it was done. My fear right now is that I know that it will take a least a month to complete this injector project, and it cost about $50 to fill the truck up(tiny tank) and i can only go about 250miles or so, and thats being nice and driving light footed...

No, there is no such thing as a 'cheap' MB diesel. You will spend money in either purchase price or repairs, and you will spend time in doing things yourself.
Of course many here will find the money and/or time well spent.

You can get a set of injectors at your doorstep in a couple of days and have them installed in a couple of hours. Not cheap but cheaper than buying, registering and insuring another car. I'd wager quicker too.

There is a '80 SD in the forsale section for like 475. It's in Indiana too.. so not too far from you.

I've pulled injectors out of a yard for $16.00 a piece that worked quite well. It looks to me like you're already getting the MB bug and looking for an excuse to buy another one.

I picked up my '86 190d 2.5 NA for $550. Including the car, taxes, plates (temp and perminent) safety and repairs, I am it about $700. It was at a side of the road dealer, no car over $1500. Found it on Kijiji for $1000. I got him initially down to $600 by email, so I went to look at it. Offered him $500, we agreed on $550. Drove it home on a 10 day temp plate, worked on it for a week straight, a couple of hours a day. New exhaust was in the trunk when I bought it. Patched the floors with some free tin I found. Changed 2 tie rod ends. Exorcised the electrical gremlins from the dash. Thats it. The single most expensive thing I did to it was install leather cupholders, a $32 investment. That may have brought me slightly over $700.
I am so happy with the car, I am selling what was my daily driver, a 2002 Pontiac Sunfire. My wife drives the new car, a 2006 Ford FiveHundred. The monthly payments on it are as much as my 190 was paid in full! I have since found a B-100 supplier, offering it cheaper than diesel. Now I have also found a steady source of WVO! Cost of ownership is plummeting! So, yes! there is such thing as a cheap Mercedes Diesel. I'm driving one. And, It came from a used car dealer! Search Craigslist, Kijiji, and offer on every diesel car 60% of what they are asking. You will get a lot of nasty replies, lots of sarcastic emails and flat out "NO's" 'but, you may get a "Yes". You don't know these people, you will probably never know them and they will not know you. You won't even ever see them. You have nothing to loose by lowballing them. Just keep it above a repectable 60% offer ![]() |
