Price, Best Source R134a
Six weeks ago I paid $9.99 for a 12 oz. can of R134a. Today I paid 13.99. Pep Boys both times. Has there been a general price spike, and if so why?
What's my best source for those 12 oz. cans? Thanks.

Forget the 12oz cans You can get a 30lb cylinder from Sam's Club for $145 it ends up being less than $5 a can.

Humor me. Let's say I have a sentimental attachment to 12 oz. cans. What would be the best source?

Be careful that those 12 OZ cans don't have sealer traveling incognito as "long life" or some similar description.

Sams Club has a box of 12-12oz cans for $40 or was it $60. I bought it last year, i dont remember anymore. Its much cheaper than buying single cans from any auto parts store or walmart.

Ive usually gotten cans for about $6-7 each. There has been a slow price increase. R134a will soon go the way of the dodo and will be priced like R12 was a few years back due to scarcity.
I bought a 30# container for the long run and that was the best deal. It is a good recommendation (along with a real, US-made set of gauges) if ou are actually going to maintain your cars long term.

figure your car is going to need a recharge at least once every 2 years. if you have more than one car, that's around 8 cans every 2 years, and every time you hook up or disconnect the can you let in trash to the system. a 30lb jug lets you put in total charge in one shot. the can does not get cold when charging nearly as fast, and it eliminates the can swap mix with air/water if you have neighbors, you can make money actually! I also agree get a GOOD set of gauges. the junk from harbor freight will work once or twice, but not much more. best to get a good set of yellow jacket or JB gauges from a pawn shop/swap meet, or yard sale, and order online a pair of 134 adapters and the tank adapter.

Usually, the trick is that the most-expensive cans at eye-level are the special blends wih 'cool-boost', 'System-safe leak-sealer', UV dye, etc....
You need to read the labels carefully. The leak-sealer is supposed to be bad news. Even though the cheapest cans are often semi-hidden on the bottom shelf, they can still sell out pretty quick! This week, Pep Boys had it for $9.99, while Walmart was $7.27. Big Lots gets some at the start of summer for $5, but they run out fast. Happy Motoring, Mark

They are starting to talk about replacing 134, so having a bulk of it on hand is a good thing unless you plan on buying a new car every year or two. |
