What does injector "nailing" sound like?
Hey all, my 190d 2.5na has intermittantly been making a ticking noise at idle. It comes and goes with no pattern. I have isolated it down to ticking with the pulse of number 4 injector line. Car runs great, all my other fuel problems are fixed. It seems to have started after filling up at a station I have never been to. I am also out of conditioner right now and did not ad any to the tank for the first time. the car had 380,000km when the odometer stopped working.
My understanding is the valves require no adjustment. No comments about my WVO woe's. I have been running dino the past few tanks. I started running running WVO again today, sounds the same. |

Like someone driving a 6" spike into a 2" old oak board with a 2lb sledge.

Its a ting ting ting noise weird. You could have lifter (cam follower) noise as well.
The injectors will make more noise on straight diesel. The grease tends to make them shut slower. If you have run conditioner for a few tanks & are using good diesel, probably you dont need it so much now. Just dont go to that station again. Let some guy in a jedda have problems for a change !!!

I would say the noise sounds like an exhaust leak from a cracked exhaust manifold. Single cylinder tick.
I'm not frantic about this problem, but the car is my daily driver. I suppose if i can get to it when it is acting up I could crack the suspect injector line and see if it goes away. My understanding of the valve train is it has direct actuation of the valves by the camshaft with hydraulic compensators. I would think that it would, if anything, act up more when first started? |

I was just flipping through the service manual (mercedes factory, not aftermarket) When checking the hydraulic compensators it says:
"Check engine oil level, making absolutely sure it is not overfilled" Why would they be so concerned about this? I realize the oil level is critical, high = bad, low = bad, but why be "absolutely sure" when checking the compensators? What could high oil level do to these? Mine is overfilled a bit, never though much of it, should I? (to be honest I thought it would leak out) |

There are many on here who have very strong views on oil level. My own opinion is its not as critical for N/A motors. Overfill a turbo motor & you definitely risk a runaway. I have never had a problem when the oil is on that red plastic bit on the dipstick. I think yours has the same motor as my 250TD. I find that when it gets close to 1/2 way between the high & low marks, the level warning light starts to come on when i go around left corners or brake. Filling it up with oil then tends to make the compensators quieter.

It could be a worn Heim end on the belt tensioner damper. Wedge a flat screwdriver tip between the head and the Heim end and see if the noise goes away.

I know that is shot already, it makes a rattle, not a tick. I am hoping it is just fuel related. I sold my other car yesterday so this one is my main mode of transport |

A can or two of Diesel Purge will clean out the injectors, and might help you diagnose wether or not it's an injector problem or something else.

Belt tensioner shock ends,
vacuum pump crimped-on cap, Leaking pre-chamber, exhaust flex-coupler or manifold gasket, lifter My guesses. If it is nailing, you will be afraid to rev the engine, sounds that nasty.

since running an increased dose of WVO in the fuel, it seems to have cleared up. Must have been a lubricity problem in my worn injectors.
