w123 cigarette lighter stuck (and also, can it power a GPS?)
Hey guys,
I am the proud owner of a W123 300d (1984). However, much to my disappointment, the cigarette lighter doesn't seem to power my Garmin GPS... Does anyone have any experience using a Garmin GPS in their W123? Since the lighter socket did not power the GPS, I thought the first thing to try would be to press the lighter itself, to see if it would charge the lighter. Well, unfortunately, the lighter somehow got stuck... It kinda pressed in, and never popped out. Worse yet, it seems like that whole unit is now getting very hot, as if the lighter never stops heating up (but it's very possible I'm just feeling heat from the transmission tunnel). How can I get this thing out? And what will it take to get my GPS charging? Thanks! |

If it doesn't pop up and doesn't power the GPS, it sounds like the lighter has no power running to it at all. Have you checked to make sure it's connected?

It should be able to power your GPS no problem. The lighter in your car is switched with position 2 on the ignition switch (IE the position the key goes to when you release it after starting)

You should be able to get something like a paint scraper under the edge of the lighter and pop it out. Or possibly even get a hold on it with a long nosed set of pliers and pull it up.
I would suspect that you don't have a working socket in the first place, as it didn't pop out. Typically it's the heating of the element that causes the socket to let the lighter pop back up. As to the GPS charging, test the socket with a meter, and start chasing back from there. Maybe the fuse for the outlet is blown, or corroded?

Just snap out the ashtray. The lighter is integral to the ashtray so that will stop it from heating if that's actually happening.
The ashtray is connected to the car by a pressure contact. I'm not sure that it's a great solution for a long term device. Do you have a working stock radio? If so, then you've got power to the lighter circuit and there's probably a contact issue with the lighter and the the power cord. If not (both to stock radio and/or working radio) then you've probably got a wiring issue. Pop out the ashtray, remove the two screws, look for the wiring harness, test with voltmeter. |
