87 300 TDT radiator replacement , Psfred?

As a preventive measure, I'm planning to replace my radiator. I understand the old ones tend to crack at the necks eventually. I'm going to do whatever it takes to avoid over-heating the engine and the "delicate" aluminum head.
1) What's a good source? Dealer wants $470 - I'd like
to spend $250 - $300
2) Behr or Nissens?

3) Do all new and after-marked have the updated necks
with metal inserts, or do I need to specify?

I'd also like to disconnect / disable the EGR valve. Is there a simple procedure? do I just disconnect the vaccum?

Thanks for any suggestions

By the way Peter, I've got to say I appreciate all your good advice it's been very helpful, especially since you also own an 87 300 D. Not to leave anyone else out - somehow I feel guilty getting all this free information. Thanks to all!
