Removal of Passenger Carpet Panel on 1985 300SD
Hi,
I am trying to get to my blower on the 1985 300 SD, but am having trouble getting the carpet panel off to get to the last screw holding the blower cover. I have removed the 5 screws, and it will wiggle, but not come off. Is there a certain way to pull it or what do I do so that I don't break it. I found this paragraph in a dash change guide posted a couple of years ago, but it doesn't tell me everything I need apparently. "1. Remove the carpet panels underneath the steering wheel and underneath the glove box. The panel under the steering wheel is held on by three screws anchored at the top of the carpet panel. Use a simple Phillips head screw driver to remove them. Then there is a little plastic hook (further down) on the right-hand side that also has a Phillips attachment. Finally, on the left side, underneath the panel there is one more Phillips head screw. That one is tough to get to…you will have to lay down into the foot well and use a flashlight to look up there. The carpet panel on the left is also held on by five Phillips head screws…although this time the plastic one is on the left instead of the right." What is the trick? I have to figure it out so I can change the blower, or I may sweat to death in GA. Thanks. |

You need to remove the black plastic piece under the dash, forward of the carpeted piece first. To do this, i believe you need to remove the kick panel; it makes it easier to remove the knee bolster too.(carpeted piece where the passengers left knee would touch)

Thanks for the scan and the input. I have removed that lower cover already, though I didn't remove the kick panel yet. I kind of wiggled it out. I can see the last screw holding the blower cover too, but I can't get on it without removing the knee carpet panel. Does it have any clips behind there or hooks? I've gotten pretty rough with it, but I am afraid to break it.
I will try to remove the kick panel and bolster tomorrow to see if that gives me luck. I don't have to remove the vent duct, do I? Thanks again. |

Knee bolster has that big black plastic screw holding it. No clips per se, it has these rigid straps that hold it on. Slide it down and foward, it will come.
