The guy from parts? Who's he?

The 85 California model has a different transmission but it uses the same Dexron II/III transmission fluid as any MB automatic through 1995. Changing the fluid probably won't have much effect on shift timing and quality based on the symptoms you describe.

Hard 1-2 shift might be related to not having the ALDA if the rest of the system, particularly the transmission vacuum amplifier, is calibrated for throttle input if there were a functioning ALDA. Could also be misrouted vacuum hoses. Flaring is often caused by an improper vacuum signal.

Early upshifts sounds like a misadjusted bowden cable. Again, possibly because the absence of the ALDA means less throttle input required to accelerate.

Short answer, yes, changes in shift behavior can be related to removing the ALDA.

if you do decide to turn the bowden cable make sure you are very careful w/ it and dont force it, I broke mine that way...25 yr old plastic is brittle

Ditto I adjusted the ALDA for more fuel enrichment. More power+less throttle pressure needed=need for bowden cable adjustment. Turn the adjuster out to tighten the cable then go drive it. Repeat as necessary until desired shift points are reached. Be careful not to break adjuster, though!

The vacuum signal varies with throttle position. IIRC the basic signal is a max of 15" HG at idle to 0 at WOT. The vacuum amplifier used around 1985-1987 modifies the signal further based on boost signal to the ALDA.

The 1985 W123 300D used a 722.416 transmission, at least mine did. It takes standard Dexron fluid, don't know about the gasket or filter as I didn't have problems getting them.

The gasket for the calif 85 is a different shape than for the Federal 85.
the filter is the same.

Allpartexpress shows both.
