615 vs 616

What are the differences between the 615 and 616 other than displacement?

Why did MB classify the 2.4 liter Diesel a 616 when the 2.0 and 2.2 are 615?

Well, the 615 and 616 are four cylinders, different displacement, the 617 is a five cylinder.

615/616 are the same except cylinder bore and injection system.

615.940 was 2.0 and .941 was 2.2L so I don't think it was from displacement alone, I believe it was converting to the mechanical governor instead of pneumatic that earned the number up.
