when you guys say start without plugs do you mean just turn the key with no pre-glow or do you mean completely unplug the glow plug relay?

upgrade your 240D's gp's

Soot, Are you still using the loop style gp's with the buss bar on your 240D? If so, than when one goes out, the circuit is dead. Upgrade to the pencil type, and if you lose one, you'll still have 3 good ones. Also, you can use the old relay. Dieselgiant.com has an article on it.

When I say problems I mean 2 to 4 revolutions and it fires up. It usually starts like a Gasser firing when you fully engage the key.

Hardly a problem When you compare it to my worn out 240D.

I checked the glow plugs and figured I would find one bad...... To my surprise I found three dead. Only 4 and 5 are functioning yet the car still starts.

My question is if all were to fail would these engines still start ? temps are in the 50's in the mornings so I guess that helps .

According to my 240D this shouldn't be possible. One goes out on it and it stays home.

Haven't been on in a few days and didn't realize this thread had grown.

Thanks for all the replies.
Wife's car is starting great 240D on the other hand has had the upgrade for about 5 years. It has always been a bear to start below 40* . Ive adjusted valves replaced relays spent countless hours looking through threads.

I have faced the facts that the engine is about worn out with compression numbers in the high hundreds to low two hundreds. Without a preglow its even hard to start in the summer .

The future plan is to swap in a 617 turbo with the 4spd. In the mean time I'm going to try a new starter to squeeze a few more miles out of it. It turns much slower than the 300's so its worth a shot.

parts are on hand Time seems to be the hardest thing to come by lately, especially with the shorter days.
