Steering Play

Hi,

I recently fixed some of the play on my dad's (W115 240D 1975) by unscrewing the nut on top of the steering box and then tightening the hex nut on to it.... that seemed to fix some of the play, the nut was loosened to its full extent and the hex nut tightened on to it.

But now the play seems to have come back and the tensioning nut doesn't seem to do anything the and its pretty bad any advice?

Thanks Jeremy

Taking play out of the steering gear in the steering box means turning the hex nut counter clockwise. This would seem like loosening in most applications but this is the way the steering box is designed. Did you do that or did you turn it clockwise? If you turned it clockwise you have loosened it more.

I did turn it counter clockwise and that fixed the problem... but then something happened and the play is back and the nut doesn't do anything now

There are many parts to the steering on these cars. Be sure the play is because of the steering box before you start to adjust it too much. If it is, you must take care not to adjust the steering box too tight as it will quickly fail. There is a measurment of left/right free-play to be performed at the steering wheel for correctly setting the steering box. At this time I can't remember the measurment but I'm sure one of the fellas on here can tell ya.

I had the same problem. I kept tightening and it kept coming back. I think it is just a sign that it is box is coming to an end. On my car I decided to buy a rebuild box and put it in. Of coarse check all other steering components to make sure thet are ok.

the play is in the steering box, when you shake the steering wheel back and forth as if your checking for play the pitman arm does nothing, so the play is back and the nut that adjusts the play doesn't do anything

UH-OH
any other options?
I live in srilanka and parts are really hard to come by it would be impossible to buy a rebuilt box here.... is it very involved to fix?
would it result in further damage using it for a while the way it is?
