Interesting swap: MB diesel into older 3-series BMW

Found the thread on a BMW website. Here is: http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1540777

Apparently, it's a OM605 going into an E21 BMW chassis. Looks promising.

The 605 will be the only redeeming feature that the BMW will have. Waste of a good motor.

No, it's also good for pouring new parts into.

Man. Rough crowd.

I am not sure exactly what BMW is the recipient of the OM605 in the above listed project, but damn, what a sweet motor/build.

Sitting in traffic this past week I was wondering about building a W201 race car powered by an OM605/6 with a 5 or 6 speed manual trans. It would have the potential to be lethal in the grassroots club racing environment. Assuming it could be made to handle well with reasonable effort.

I get to drive many BMWs on the race track, and have only driven a few MBs. I have to say at this point, it seems the BMW is superior. Until I drive a benz that is more nimble and forgiving, I wont be changing my mind.

I love the handling characteristics of my MBs, but they have no track prowess. That is fine, since I purchased them to be fine luxury automobiles. My wife and daughter are in a benz, as I feel they are more safe.

I give the bimmer some credit. (E30, E36, E46).

The BMW E21 was the first of the 3-series introduced in 1977 and replaced by the E30 in 1984.

European and US versions of the E21 looks like this:

I think some of the previous posters need to look at this as an improvement to the BMW, not a disaster for the engine.

In my part of the continent, there aren't a lot of old classics to be found like down south. That is, we don't go for milk at the grocery store and see a new one hiding in the corner of someone's yard like a raccoon every couple of days.

So I guess I kind of like reading things like that thread. I had an engine sitting in my garage for the past three years.....no one wanted it until last weekend. Kind of a sad fate for an engine, don't you think?
