300 td niose in rear suspension
I have just gotten a 300 td wagon. When I hit a bump in the road, fast on the highway or slow over a speed bump, it sounds as if something in the rear bottoms out. It is loud and jolts the hole car. I can go over a speed bump at an angle and I get the thud once for each rear wheel. Where should I look to rectify this issue?

also inspect the swaybar links, they could be broken, and hitting things.

Just got the car 8 days ago. Last guy put accumulators on the rear. Looks like I need to look everything over. Looks to set level now. It sat from Tuesday to Saturday and did not sag in the rear. Thanks for the reply.

Have a read through this it will help you under stand the rear suspension on the wagon.
- Self-Leveling-System - How it works, and troubleshooting the system I too would suggest check the sway bar links. They can make all kinds of racket when they break. They look like the pic below. Might also make sure the hatch is closed securely. When I got mine it rattled a bit. I adjusted the catch to tighten it up. Also check the exhaust hangers. Then I'd start looking at the rear suspension.

1. Thanks Andrew, for the link, that was helpful.
2. My hatch, both rear doors, spare tire and jack are all secure and the sway bar links look good as well as the exhaust. 3. This AM with a teenager and a back full of books in the rear seat, I fired it up and as I went down the drive I could tell we were lifting in the rear. Within 100 feet we were up in the back. We also do not thud as much with the load in the rear seat. 4. I have no external leaks and it stays up overnight. 5. I will check the accumulator with a dull probe and the valve link adjustment this weekend. 6. I read on another forum where someone had the same symptom, a thud on rear spring extension after a bump. They said the replaced some type of rubber bushing or bumper on the rear sls strut. Is that correct? I have only seen this in one place and have read several threads about sls. I have not found the thread again. Thanks again, Tony

Tony,
I know you know really... you gotta look everywhere underneath at the back. Jack it up and get a pry bar in around ALL the subframe mounts, diff mount etc. Don't forget the drive shafts while you're there (btw, I claim "subframe mount" in the sweepstakes)! happy hunting giles |
