What are the symptom of bad valve lifters?
What are the symptoms? Bad blow by because valves not closing? Any tools to do a simple check? The 300SDL has 12 lifters, how to isolate the bad ones? I can put up with the noise.

Bad lifters normally are the result of their inability to hold oil pressure. This results in them becoming noisy like a 617 with loose valves.
Only in cases of complete failure will it show up on a compression test. The clack clack sound is the easiest way to detect them. They can result in a loss of power & can cause high rev problems as the valves can bounce. One would not expect them to contribute to blow by greatly.

Bad lifters usually are compressed, won't hold a valve open as far as they should and thus a decrease in power (usually undetectable). Compression is not affected. The simple indication is lifter clatter/noise.
I'm told that if a lifter can be compressed by hand (with oil in it), it's bad.
