W116 engine\tranny in 123
Just need a quick confirmation here. Will a 1980 300SD (w116) engine and tranny drop into a 1979 300D (w123) ? I assume it will sine they both have an OM617.

Tjhe earlier 116 TD's were lower HP like 107 instead of the 125 the 123's had--I think it was the 78-79 116 sd's that bwere lower, The engine /tranz should fit-No phisical diffeerence but speedo is probablydifferent-is it mechanical in the 116?-and harness going to tranz probably

The 79 SD has a solid rod transmission control as opposed to a Bowden cable. Don't know if that rod will fit in a 123. I think there are some oil pan differences on the early 116 617's also but I can't remember exactly what they are.

Many thanks, that what I needed to know, my w123 also has the solid rod so no worries. I was planning to take the engine and tranny out of the 1980 sd and put them into my 1979 300d.. If the oil pans were different I imagine they could be swapped over....Also I was under the impression that the 1980 300SD produced 120 hp

I think the difference is that early 116 617's had no oil separators in the PCV system and hence no drain tube back into the pan.
