92 300D with Self-Leveling?

Ebay has a 92 300D on auction and it is now at $4,100 (reserve met). It has 313kmi. See at:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=599784311

I was surprised to see it has the reservoir for the self-level suspension.

Is it an option on that car?

All I can say is "What A GREAT car!!!". I have almost 180K on mine, a friend of mine has 450K and another friend has 675K..all of which have never had the engine apart nor do they use any oil.

As far as the self leveling suspension, i have never seen that.

That is why I asked. It could be a gray market car.

Interesting. I'll look through the W124 CDROM and see if I can find out what that would be in the sedan.

I'm not interested in the car, since I've already GOT more cars than needed.

So, I'll just offer observations:

1) How does a car with 313K on the clock not show any rock chips on the hood?

This implies a possible repaint, or 313K stop-and-go city miles?

2) Are the wheels stock for this year? They appear to be sticking out a little further than stock.

3) The crossover pipe from the turbo to the intake manifold has a black smear (leak) at the right joint. Actually, the left joint too. Obviously the EGR system is still passing exhaust into the intake. So I wonder if this is diesel or oil?

4) CarFax shows the car just went through the New England Regional Auto Auction - so you need to decide if you think that means anything to you.

Say, did'ya notice the $26,500 Mercedes W123 for sale:

I am not interested in that car either.

Just that self-leveling reservoir looks strange in that car (econo E-class).

I don't thinks its a grey market car....if you look at the outside temp display on the dash it reads Farenheit...grey market would be in Centigrade I think.......as for the tires they may be somewhat larger than stock....but it doesn't really look that abnormal...I would however look carefully at the paint,it appears to way to glossy for those many miles with no rocks chips that I can see....but hey for $4000.00 on a car with 313K what would you expect?

Looks very sound to me. Haven't seen an interior with that many miles looking that good in a long time.

3 owners at just over 100K each.

Dealer took it on trade and sent it to auction because they were scared by the miles.

No way thats going to stay at that kind of money for another 4 days. Wish I was in a position to bid.

Wonder what the story is on that......

Hi

That car is just like mine. The reservoir you see is for the Automatic locking differential (ASD) : that system is hydraulically controlled and effective up to 19 mph. That traction system was offered on W124 only for the diesel. The gaz model had a more fancy system : automatic slip control (ASR) which electronically modulate brake pressure on the spinning wheel and power to the drive train ; that system operate up to highway speeds.

Very interesting - don't think I could have guessed that one! I wonder if there is a typical maintenance procedure to drain and replace the hydraulic fluid for that system?

Also, out of interest, I wonder if anyone had the chance to see the "Buy-It-Now" price on the '92 300D auction? This seller has "BIN" prices on just about all his auctions.

Just trying to learn from other people's EBay selling strategies (for when the time MIGHT come to sell something )

Oh, I forgot to ask Denrac (or anyone else) to comment on whether they think those eight-hole wheels are stock for 1992.

OK, it is for the ASD.

Abot wheels, I know the 91 has the 15-hole. I THINK the 92 has the 8-hole as these 8-holes are often referred to as "92 style alloy."

Mine is equipped with the 15-hole wheels. In the sales documentation that I have, those wheels are stock. The 8-hole are shown only for the 400E.

For the hydraulic fluid of the ASD, I've checked the CD and there is no mention of fluid replacement : the only documented maintenance item is level checking. On my car, corrosion of the feed line to the pressure unit near the differential forced me to renew the hydraulic fluid. It's a special dealer item and not really cheap. The protective shield for the pressure unit is a nice place for snow and salt accumulation : in the long term, the hydraulic steel line don't appreciate it.

Very interesting, I was looking and talking to the ebayer of this car a couple days ago before i read this post (this morning)!

What a suprise there was a thread on the car i was interested in buying!

I dont think I am going to go for it though, so you all dont have to worry about me trying to bid against you.
