Today I prepped the third brake light for the CD. I was lucky enough to get two lights to piece together. Thanks to Fulcrum525 I had a light with a perfect reflector and gasket, but a cracked housing and melted lens. Thanks to Shaggydiesel, I had a complete, crack free light with the mounting tower for a w126, but it had a bad reflector and no gasket.
I disassembled both lights and harvested all the good parts to make one perfect light. Then I cleaned everything and painted it with Palomino SEM Color Cote. I also had to cut the mounting tower to fit in the rear window of the CD. All that's left is to run the wires up to the light and it's complete. I think it looks great. ![]() The blue piece is what I had to cut off the mounting tower. ![]() ![]() ![]()

I like it, but could use some clarification. Is that just a W126 third brake light assembly, or is it some special amalgamation? Also, does it seal tight enough to the glass to prevent throwing red light around the interior of the car at night?
Oh, and I see you hid a small sub in there under your med kit cover. Nice. I might have to try that.

The gasket makes full contact all around. This pic shows it a bit better: ![]()

Do you have any info on how much you trimmed off the mount?
I'm sure a lot of us are interested in this, just not asking ![]()

Well, I know I am. I sort of hate getting rear-ended. Anything I can do to reduce the risk is worthwhile, in my mind. I'm ready to go hunt for a third break light at the yards now.

I guess the feds didn't want them on cars imported for some lame reason. The extra light is only on the left side and comes on when you pull the light switch out 2 notches. The US cars only have one notch (front fogs)

Finally, somebody has installed a "proper" W123 3rd brake light, at least for sedans and coupes. The S123 owners might want to look into using S124 3rd brake light assemblies, the glass angle should be very similar. ![]()

"It's a standard w201, 124, 126 third brake light with a w126 mounting tower that I modified by trimming it shorter."
the 201 and 124 used the same light, different base. the 126 light was larger and had a different angle to the lens side, and a different base. since you said the gasket makes contact all around, need to know what the part number is (can't read it int he picture) so I can know which kind to use for my own project

w201, w124 and w126 used the same light. If you take one apart, all three are listed inside. They all just use different height mounting towers. ![]() ![]()

Thanks Chad!
I might have to look for a more viable alternative than cutting. But the W126 is the most similar to the W123 (from the trio). I smell another project coming on ![]()
