recommend water separation filter?

anyone running a water separation filter?

I'm planning on taking trips to mexico, and have some concerns regarding the quality of diesel south of the border.
I have found a few kits, even some that have reusable filters

Anything in the 80gph range sould be good...right?

any input/recommendations are appreciated.

I have one installed on the 240 and my Datsun Diesel PU. it is the Racor FG-200 and uses the SM-2000 filter.

The unit has a large clear bowl, with the filter element that fits onto the lid nipple, held together with a clamp. Has a drain on the bottom.

I have had the one on the Datsun for the past 28 yrs. If the filter does plug up, it can be removed . replace the lid and drive on. there is the spin on filter past it. It comes in 3 micron sizes, 2, 10 and I forget the other size. replacement Filters can be bought at NAPA, and West Marine and maybe other auto supplies.

I have seen others, but some have the the metal filter between the top and lower bowl. If it plugs up I feel your screwed, cant remove it and drive on.

I have had the one on my PU shut me down 2 times over the past 20 yrs. usually because I neglected it. one time at 1AM coming home from a trip from the air port. engine would idle,, but lost pwr. removed the filter element, pumped up the primer and drove on. then replaced it a few days later.

Leave the small prefilter in place if you want. I removed mine, just have the Racor and the spin on.

I think if you do a search, there has been some threads on this subject before.

thanks for the info...will do some searching.

good point about the benefits of a non spin-on filter solution.

I have not done much research into what they offer for small diesels, but the FASS system is excellent for all around.

I'm going to take the opposite view, and state that my policy is not to let water into the fuel tank in the first place.

Have posted before about "won't pass water" filter funnels.

Concerning the Funnel that will not pass water. Where do you keep it in the Trunk when you are not using it. In order not to create a smelly mess in the Trunk you would need some sort of bucket with a Lid.

Also the Funnel idea does not deal with condensation. Although it would be abnormal for Condensation to turn into enough Water to cause a problem.

I cut apart my Spin-on Filter and after about 1.5 years of use it had about 1/4 Teaspoon of Water in it (the Ocean is about 3 miles away from where I live).

Seeing as a W124 has enough room in the boot/trunk for about 3 sets of golf clubs, plus the bodies of a couple of caddies, room to stash a funnel is a lousy objection to carrying one.

Can you say zip-lok?

Filter Funnel (In ZIp Loc in the trunk)

http://www.mrfunnel.com/Mr._Funnel/Models.html

(We just never tell the Mercedes we also use it on the outboard's fuel tank.)

Oh, Yes Racor S3203 in place of the tiny Primary filter.

In the past toyota landcruiser diesels down here had a filter with a built in float that detected water. when you got a puddle in the bottom of the filter it warned you & there was a drain cock. I have tractors with clear bowls under the element that allow you to keep an eye out for water.

I guess you are saying the Diesel Fuel does not eat through a Zip-lok bag; I did not know that.

I am not objecting to using a Funnel; I just wanted to know how you were keeping you Trunk from getting messy.
While I prefer the smell of Diesel Fuel over the smell of Gasoline I do not want that smell in my Trunk, hands or clothing. For me using the Funnel would present a lot of chances to make a mess.

On the other and the Funnel could save money on Fuel Filters and keep Water and other stuff out of the Fuel Tank decreases he chance of
introducing something that will grow inside of your Fuel Tank.

I never understood why they used a lawnmower filter on a system that moves as much fuel as this.
Napa sells several different filter heads and spin-on filters with drains so you can have a variety of mounting options. Rather than set it up to be able to be bypassed, just carry an extra filter in a ziploc bag in the trunk (cardboard box will deteriorate and contaminate filter if used for storage in a car). If you get one with a cleanable element, then just use your can of carb cleaner spray to clean it out on the side of the road (all road kits should have at least one large can of Gumout carb and choke cleaner, it's great at dissolving grease for wheel bearings, etc).

Here's one from this forum. If the cat filter is used I think it separates the water just no way to drain it.

Lower Micron Fuel Filter Mod
