I agree, I think I have spent about $400 in 20 years or driving oldies and most of that was towing new purchases across town (which would probably not have been legally covered by AAA or other contracts).

The more you can afford to self-insure, the better off you will be....
You are so right!

The money I am saving by self-insuring my home, pays for most of it's maintenance - that is until the day it burns down.

You are confusing "self insurance" with "no insurance." They are not at all the same concept.

It was only free roadside service for these three items:
1) Battery jump start.
2) Changing out a flat tire with the car's spare tire.
3) A few gallons of fuel if your car runs out of fuel.
A jump was all the car needed to get home. When my wife called me she was over 150 miles away with a dead battery. She is a saint and waited patiently for me to get there in another car. It took a while, but the car eventually started and I figured out the alternator was the culprit. We made it home after dark and completely used up what little juice was left in the battery to power the running lights so I was at least visible to other cars. I didn't realize until after we got home and my wife following me told me that that not having electricity means no brake lights either. Probably not the smartest move, but I always thought it was neat how unnecessary electricity is for these diesels. If I had a clutch, I could roll start a car without a battery or an alternator!

You probably won't believe it, but you can do that without a clutch, too.

If you can reach 18mph with transmission cold and 30mph with it warm and keep it rolling at that speed for a minute, yes we canŠ. That'd require a tow or a long enough downhill stretch.

I'm not confusing self-insurance with no insurance.

The terms are interchangeable.

It's ALL on me.
