Unconventional "repair"

So, the charging system light started flickering on the SD a few weeks ago, followed by a roaring noise coming from the alternator a few days later. I removed the alternator and found the slip ring end (rear) bearing was shot and the slip rings were worn into the case - hence the flickering light. The brushes and regulator looked good. I replaced the bearings and reassembled it. However, the pulley nut and shaft threads were cross-threaded. I tried my best to use a tap and die set to make it right, but I could only snug it up. I installed it and the thing charged fine! Today, I noted a clanking noise coming from the alternator again. The fan was hitting the case, due to that stripped out nut and shaft. So, I removed it and welded the fan, washer, and pulley to each other, and then welded the above to the stripped out nut and shaft. Voila! Fixed, until it stops charging - er, ah, then I will need to replace. Redneck repair? I'd say so. But, so far, so good.

God bless Rednecks and Hillbillies!! Where there is a will there is a way. I too am guilty of a little redneck engineering when all else fails or the situation requires it. Another plus you saved yourself a little X-mas money.

Well done man, mechanincing at it's creative best. No dealer would have offered you that option. Make sure you record the date so you remember how long it lasts. The only way it could have been any better was if you were in the middle of nowhere and used the battery and a pair of jumper cables to do the welding.

there's nothing wrong with what you did. there would be so much less waste in this world if more people improvised and made things work. you couldn't do anything else, you made a part work. good for you.

Technically that is waste, because it hampers the rebuild-ability of the part. A re builder would likely scrap it, requiring a new one to take its place, thus lots more pollution.

Sometimes replacing a part properly is the right way to go!

Not so true. Remember, scrap money pays pretty good, so it will not be laying in a landfill. It will be recycled if it goes bad. Time will tell!
