Actually without realizing it you might have come up with something.

If a person is willing to re-route the Crankcase Breather Hose so it does not go through the Air Filter Housing Lid you no longer really need the Lid.

A hole large enough for the Central Bolt to go through could be drilled in the Plastic Cone. So the Bolt would go through the hole in the cone and you would need some sort of seal around the hole; like a rubber Grommet.

The thing that you would have to be careful of is to not over tighten the central Bolt or you could end up cracking the cone.

Actually I want the breather hose routed through inside of the air cleaner. I want the ram air pressure from the intake going into the breather inlet in the lid. If you don't it can vent out the breather inlet.

On the 85 cali the air flows from the breather inlet in the cleaner housing and flows across the tee from the crank case vent tube and into the exit tube that goes near the inlet of the turbo. It helps increase the vacuum in the crank case similar to a Venturi Siphon.

But unfortunately lets a fair amount of oel into the intake tract
On mine I used the fed oil seperator cut from the aircleaner 49 state rattlecan and am going to run the out tube down to the accordion hose port-So it will still have that effect-just No oilline running to the lid or intake hose.
I would also like to use a steel radiator top tank on my radiator with a pressure cap and get rid of the big oveflow tank for a smaller one.but that is for different diabolical modd reasons.-not trying to get out of paying big$ for a replacement filter-That reminds me.

I know that moving Air has a lower pressure than static Air. But, there is no Vacuum produced in the Air Filter Inlet (unless there is a significant plugging of the Air Filter).

If there was even a partial Vacuum in the Air Inlet system on an Engine with a Turbo Charger the Oil inside of the Turbocharger will start go past the Seal. At least it does on the Turbos that use a Piston Ring type seal.
I have seen the above happen on Turbocharded Trucks when the Air Filter gets Plugged up.

The Fram WA8039 is somewhere in the $25-$30 range. However, it is hard to find......

Not sure how many pleats. But I do think you can not make a comparison.
I'm sold by the AMSOIL marketing in which they make a claim of a synthetic material that filters 5 times more dust, holds 2.5 times more contaminants, more airflow, and 25,000 miles service before cleaning. Which I think would well make up the media size differences between the Ford filter and Cali filter.

It's too tall. Even the hold down bolt for the lid does not reach the top.

I was prompted by this thread to check the Price of the WA8039 on Amazon where I had previously bought one before.
They had reduced the price on the 3 they had left in sock to $20 each. I bought 2 of them and got the free shipping.
So I now own a total of 4 of the above Filters.

In Frams defense the Filter Media is also 100% synthetic.

"Stop Replacing Your Air Filter!
FRAM engineering has developed a revolutionary air filter featuring 100% synthetic media which is designed to:

•Filter 99% of harmful particles
•Wash in minutes for like-new performance
FRAM Washable Premium Air Filter is designed to perform like new after every wash

•Construction that's built to last!
•High-density gasket for increased durability
•Heavy Gauge stainless steel screen
•Easy to wash!
Using a bucket and household dishsoap, this filter can be cleaned in 15 minutes with minimal down-time for drying."

Of course it does not say what size the 99% of the harmful particles are.
I have read claims it can be washed 10 time and now they say 20 times.
I am guessing that they will be able to be washed more than that.

I know this is an old thread, but what about this one? I know K&N doesn't have the best rep here, but it seems this would fit by just cutting a hole in the top and trimming the flange off the bottom.

RU-2940 - K&N Universal Air Filters, Universal Rubber Filter direct from K&N
