Slight flare in shifting 2-3
When someone says the car has a "Slight flare in shifting 2-3" what could be wrong with the transmission? I am not sure what is meant by "flare". Just wondering since I have seen this in several listings for 300D (turbo) & SDs. (83 - 85).

As you count the shifts moving up...
Accelerate shift 1 is from 1 to 2 Shift 2 is from 2 to 3. What they are complaining of is that as the transmission is shifting, it first, takes longer to make it from gear 2 to 3 and they can also recognize that the tachometer needle will go up past the shift point without applying any forward motion or torque. It will feel like a brief transmission slip or clutch slip. What is happening is the clutch has disengaged without re-engaging completely to the next gear, torque is applied to the clutch and the clutch doesn't have enough "grip" to move the drive shaft. The result is speedy wear of the clutch discs and dirtying of the fluid with the clutch material. Known Solutions 1st...change the tranny fluid and filter http://www.dieselgiant.com/mercedestransmissionfluidchange.htm 2nd...(flame Suit on) If two fluid replacements don't help, then add lucas stop slip to the transmission. My e320 NEEDED a rebuild or a new tranny and I am still on the old tranny with 2 bottles of stopslip.

On the subject vehicle, the initial shift on normal acceleration from a stop is from second gear to first. Under no load, initial shift is from second to third.

My 87 300d is flaring 2-3 but then after the flare it lands in drive, seems wrong.
For the 2-3 flare on most w123 i have had suxxess with replacing the k1 thrust pin inside the valve body and new fluid,i had been using Mobil 1 synthetic but i now hear it is not available anymore for some reason,i also liked the Redline atf and the amsoil atf but far superior is the Swepco ATF. If youd like and after replacing k1 spring part # 126 270 44 77you can also tighten the tranny modulator a bit,it will make slightly harder shifts but will take care of the flare for up to say 50k miles in my experience. |
