1984 300 SD

Has any one changed out their block heater on an 84 SD? It is beside the starter and appears to be in a bad place. I was thinking I might could get a socket on it. I have checked the cord and it is good. I hooked a 110 volt light to it. I am hoping I will not have to remove manifold. Comments and suggestions welcome. Help Please.

Fair number of threads on this topic here. I think the general consensus is that replacing the OE block heater is a major pain and a lower radiator hose heater is a much better alternative. If you do want to change the OE heater, there are a couple of threads here describing methods for getting it out.
