Need help, suggestions on over heat...

OK, my water pump seems to be leaking a little out the little hold around it. leaks about a half quart a day right now but has been drivable with no other issues, I have just been topping it off with antifreeze.

I replaced the thermostat and the pressure cap on the tank earlier.

Yesterday, she all of a sudden pegged the redline on the tempo gauge. I pulled over and popped the hood, got the cap off and added coolant... she would not drop from red line. Go it home and ran cold water over the radiator and in the expansion tank and and still could not get the temp down... Temp goes down of course when it's off. so the gauge seems to be working.

Does this mean my water pump has completely failed? She was my only running car at the moment and It's left me kind of up a creek here...

What is the test to check the temp sensor? Just to see if it's reading correct. I wonder cause of not being able to get it to come down even with pouring the cold water in and around.

Thanks

I wouldn't bother testing the temp sensor. Just replace the water pump.

... as finicky as the 87 heads are, ANY issue with cooling needs to be addressed instantly. if you have a KNOWN leak, and you have not addressed it, you are likely running with air pockets in the very weak very soft head... and likely it's blown apart. the 120 pegging is a very bad sign of possible exhaust dumping into the coolant.

Update...

Ok, I have been outside looking it over and found a few other issues.

1. the car seems to be smoking (blue) when idle and is knocking, missing. I ran threw the injectors and sure enough, cracking one of them does not make any difference to the engine running, so it's bad. Is there any way to pull it and clean it as a temp fix?

2. The aux fan will not come on normally. it will come on if I jumper it, but I can't seem to get it to run any other way. It looks to have already been updated as there are red sensors in place instead of the original blue ones. I understand that this fan only comes on from the pressure in the air con line? not from heat of the coolant? Anyways I jumped it so it will run all the time and it seems to keep the heat down for testing.

3. I tested the clutch on the fan, it seems to be working just fine. it also has the newer style plastic blades etc, and from a receipt it and the radiator where replaced new about 2 years ago.

4. There seems to be plenty of circulation in the coolant system. I can see it pouring out the hose into the expansion tank.

5. In something totally unrelated, while reaching in to jumper the aux fan I bumped the fuel line and diesel started to pour out of it. looks to be the return line. had a crack in it that was sealed unless moved... so I cut out the bad section and replaced it.

unhook the bad injector, and another one, and swap them see if the dead cylinder moves... hope it moves. if the same cylinder is still dead, you've found an issue that is not good. either the headgasket is dumping compression into your coolant/oil or the piston/valves are damaged there.

yikes, hope not... will see.

I don't have a 27mm deep-well so I have to goto the auto parts store and grab one for the test. if it is the injector, I might as well take it apart and clean it and see if I can get it to work. I found a OEM reman of it for 47 bucks plus shipping, but I really need the car running while I wait for it. Not going to order it till I do this test you brought up.

Oops, I missed the fact that we weren't talking about a 617. I'm afraid the odds are against you with your engine.

I use a Craftsman deep 1 1/16 socket. It will clear the nipples on the injector.
