How do you replace the transmission modulator on a 1981 300SD?

I've done some adjusting to get rid of the cold slip between 2nd and 3rd, and changed filter and fluid(Valvoline VI synthetic). 1st to 2nd is now too hard, and the slip is still there, though not as bad. I have a new modulator I'd like to install, and my VCV is holding good vacuum, so I guess it's on to the K1 spring kit if this doesn't work. Thanks
