om617 identification

if you have a OM617 motor on the ground, how do you tell the year? when was EGR introduced? I dont want to end up with anything earlier than my 82, preferably later because of the HP difference.

EGR's probably a good thing to look for, started in 81 I think (300sd). At some point in 83 injection pump RIV timing port came along. Then at some point in 84 the new style tach pickup. Then 85s will have a bunch of extra sensors (temperature on the thermostat housing, rack sensor on IP).

Sometimes a two digit year is cast into the head right at the front.

I also try to look at the engine block number and compare it with a database I have of engine block numbers and corresponding VINs to figure out the year if the head does not show it.

You'll need a trained eye, but other items I look for are later model emissions equipment, sensors and throttle linkage setup.

Am I correct in thinking that all the early lower horsepower SD turbo 617's had a glow plug system which relied on a temp sensor in the head? So if there are two temp sensors in the left side of the head it either could be or has to be an early model. Anyone know exactly when the temp sensor moved over in the relay?

All low power 617's will have loop glowplugs. The increased power in 1980 also came with the "new" pencil plugs and an EGR.

"Low power 617's" means the non-turbo 617.

All 1978-1985 617.95x Turbo motors has pencil style glow plugs.

No.
"Low power 617" means the 110hp 1978-79 300SD.

That is false information.

Please explain why I have seen them, on multiple occasions, with my own eyes.

I've never seen anything other then pencil style... On cars running and in cars in the junk yard.

Please go to this sites parts page along with any other reputable online parts shopping cart, type in 1978 300SD and you'll will find it will only show pencil style glow plugs to purchase. Now go to 300D of the same year, and you'll find you can purchase the loop style.

There is your problem. Try to get out more.

You still have yet to explain the ones I've seen with my own eyes that have loop plugs.

Thats either a 78 or 79, 110HP, due to the lack of EGR.
