Today I no longer hear my turbo. The trade off is peeling out 225 tires in the rear.

I had a K&N filter in my 1979 300SD (the kind that's made to fit in the original air cleaner housing, not the "hot air intake" cone type). Maybe the filter was breathing a bit too easily and letting out turbo noise. Before anyone scolds me, I am back to using paper filters.

Is that the "first muffler" on the exhaust pipe? The only way I could think of making the turbo louder would also cause unfiltered air to come in, which I don't want. I remember the first test drive I did in my 1979 300SD there was no air filter or housing on it (just went down the street and back) and I could hear the turbo loud and clear. I would love it if it was always that loud.

I tested the overboost solenoid today with a mityvac on both ports and neither port held vacuum. I then tried blowing air through the solenoid and was easily able to blow air through the port that receives the banjo bolt line and just barely able to blow air through the port going to the ALDA. Does this sound like the solenoid is bad, or should I check the sensor on the intake manifold? Thanks

Thanks winmutt, so when I go to the junkyard I'm looking for one that holds at least 15hg's of vacuum through either port?

The side and bottom port should be a flow through. When in fail mode the top one is vented. When operating normally you want the boost signal from the manifold to go do the ALDA. When in overboost that top opens up and vents to atmosphere which causes the ALDA to go into "limp" mode, or provide the same amount of fuel as it does before the turbo kicks in. Perhaps yours is hooked up incorrectly?
These solenoids can be found on every 123 and newer model in the lot.
