How much rust does the car have? I'd probably start there...

Yea; I always hear:
  • check for rust...too much, don't bother. I'm ignoring that advice
  • check engine compression; too low or inconsistent from cylinder-to-cylinder...don't bother with the engine.

I had a rusty one in college! The shock went straight through the trailing arm...I threw in the gloves It was a nice car if there wasn't rust...

But, yeah, back to the OP, I see surface rust on one of the wheel arches and some on the front. I'd probably check the various drains and underneath the battery...fun places!

Ahhh, FIRST thing you need to do is have a better look at the wagon hatch to see what your wagon should properly be referred to......

I think you will find you are utilizing one T too many......

And wow, that is one long list of stuff!! Should be just below $8000.....

Oh dear!! You also appear to have a body in the back!!

The rust isn't that bad, the wheel arch and rear hatch need attention other than that the body is pretty sold. The engine purrs, no knocking or anything, I still need to check for compression but I don't think there will be a problem there. I picked the car up for 2500 and plan on spending 1500 in mechanical and 1000 in body work to get the wagon back into good shape. I will be doing all the mechanical work myself so no cost for labor. I am picking this baby up on Saturday and hope to be able to get it on a lift to check out underneath. I will be posting pictures and progress of my work on this wagon as time goes on. I am looking for a blue Third row seat and some european lights if anybody has some.

Thank you for posting this. Every time I am about to throw in the towel on Rommel, someone posts a car that cost more to buy and needs more work.

That's a nice list you got there. I'd love to have your free time.

Hah. I got home at 5, did an oil change, dinner and stories and the babies were in bed by 7:30. I feel like ****** superman.

Make sure to read up on your self-leveling-system. Here is a guide on how the system works and all it's parts - Self-Leveling-System - How it works, and troubleshooting the system

Prioritize!

Do a full inspection of the various systems.
Braking. High priority. Liners, discs, hydraulic hoses for cracking, etc...
Engine. High priority. Oil, turbo, compression, valve clearance, injectors etc...
Fuel. High priority. Fuel lines at the tank, between injectors, pump to injection pump, manual pump, etc...
Drive train. High priority. Bearings, bushings, rear axles, flex joins, etc...
Suspension. Fairly high priority. All steering, damping, rubber, sway.
Electrical. Moderate priority. Lights, windows, dash, blower, etc...
Exhaust. Moderate to Low priority. Check the hangers and for rust.
Vacuum. Moderate to Low priority. Fuel shutoff, door locking system, Self Leveling System, servos for heating and air.
Water ducts. Low priority. Clean out all water ducting. Not a show stopper but could contribute to rust which will be a big problem if ignored.
Interior. Low priority. Should be done as one of the last things due to damage that can occur during car repair.
Exterior. Low priority. Should also be done late in the restoration due to probable damage during further repair.

Basically, inspect for show stoppers such as rust, frame damage, engine and trans damage. Repair the mechanical and electrical. Then start on the cosmetic.

Fine looking wagon!

Nice car and welcome.

I must first say that your list is a llittle overwhelming. You might be careful with those "hose clamps" They are pesky buggers !

This kind of looks like a 14 year old girls wish list.....ie everything from the catalog. LOL.

No offense, but if you'll allow me a moment to goof on language:

Please note that in most cases if you 'recently' did something, you 'just' did it, and vice versa.

Congrats btw, as the 300TD is a fantastic benz, and one that will provide great utility.

Correct me if I am wrong here, is it better to say "what I plan to do" ? You could be planning right now for the future, you might "plan on doing" or "plan to be doing".... and so on.

Please take my above comment for face value, no agenda or ill intended. I find humour in the use of language awkward, erroneous or otherwise. I also live on a two way street.

My comment is that it appears that you are very excited about this car, and that is just what this community needs. Many of us are passionate about our cars. That being said, be sure to realistically establish a goal and priorities for your car and hobby. Do you wish to spend to the moon and have 20K in a 4-8K car? Do you wish to have a nice driver on a budget and keep things in perspective?

My suggestion is to read about what commonly ails the W123TD and check all of those systems on your car. Keep in mind that certain imperfections should be tolerated and dealt with later to keep focus on maintenance priorities. As time goes by you will have a chance to visit most parts of your car and improve as possible.

If, in the first post, you made a list of everything you might need over the next 10 years of ownership and wish to test our knowledge, then I apologize.

You could add SLS components, water pump and T-stat parts/hoses/tie rods and ball joints/expansion tank/fuel bypass hoses/injector nozzles/ delivery valve seals/cigar hose/turbo drain seals/air cleaner mounts/motor mounts/climate control components, and a metric ton of fuel and oil filters.

Best of luck, keep the photos coming, and welcome to TD ownership !!

I continually see documentation referring to this model as a TDT, thus supporting its use. Clearly we all know it to be a TD, but it also seems to have earned industry designation as a TDT as well.

By the same logic quoted above, when we mention a W123, we could suggest the poster look at the back of their car and see that it doesnt say W123 at all.
