Diesel conversion of my 1988 190E, help?
I am in the process of converting my 1988 190E from gas to diesel. I got the car with engine damage, the 2.3 #4 cyl. has valve damage. The exaust plugged and caused one of the valves to stick, then the piston hit and caused damage to the seat in the head. This engine is repairable with plenty of good used parts that I don’t need. I have a good 2.2 diesel from a 1984 190D to slip in. Has anyone here done this conversion and do you have useful input to avoid pitfalls? Thanks

I have not heard or read of that conversion on this Forum. I did note on your other post you are planning on staying with the automatic transmission. I think it would be a great time to switch to a manual 5 speed also. Have you considered that. There seems to be a fair number of 5 speeds floating around, but still they are not always available. But I think it would all work out using the gas automatic if all the parts line up OK. You have to make sure the TC and flex plate will mount up with the engine and also that the input/output shafts of the transmission are of the correct size and the splines used are the same. The diesel engine is probably going to be longer. When you get it mounted will that allow the transmission to remain in exactly the same place. If it does not allow that, then you will wind up with a whole another set of problems getting the transmission to mount in different place, driveline changes, ect. You just really have to figure this thing out.

I put a 2.2 diesel (1984) into a 2.6 gas (1987).
I had both complete cars. The diesel was a manual trans., the gas was an auto. Pull the engine and trans. as a complete unit. One day to pull each. Label all the wires you unplug. After I drove the franken-car for a while and was sure that I didn't need any of the orphan wires, I just cut them off. Attached the gas auto trans to the diesel engine. Everything bolts up with no problems. Because I used the transmission that was originally in the body, the driveshaft was also the correct length. Use the diesel exhaust system. Removed the fuel pump from under the driver's side rear seat because a muffler fits in that space. Use the gas motor's mounts. I do not have a glow plug light, but the SRS light times out at about the right length of time. I used 2 electric controlled vacuum valves to control the vacuum shut off, and turn on, of the IP I had to modify (cut a passage) in the air box of the 2.2 to clear the vacuum line to the brake booster.

I would find a good used 602 turbo rather than spend the time to put that slug of an engine in your 201
