300sd is finally gonna get some work done.

so this year for taxes it was a decision to either buy a newer car or put 2k into the sd. about 5 years ago i redid the entire front suspension exept for lower control arm bushings(i know, what was i thinking?). i put shocks on it, flex disks, tie rods, upper control arms, ect. the time has come to do the lower control arm bushings, as well as all bushings in the rear end. ive got a couple of questions on it. one, would it be a good idea to put new eccentric bolts in?

also, the drivers seat has been having issues. the motor will run, but it wont move the seat. almost like a stripped gear. is there something that commonly goes bad?

the odometer, the gear busted years ago. does anyone have a link to buy the gear?

the a/c compressor, last year i spent the time and money to fully redo the a/c. after i determined no leaks i charged it with r12. worked great, and then 3 weeks later i noticed a puddle of yellow(dyed oil) oil. i realized the front seal on the compressor had gone bad. otherwise the compressor is fine. anyone know a part # or am i gonna have to try and match one up?

last question, and a big one. i am familiar enough with auto transmissons in gonna go ahead and rebuild this one. my only question is, the kit doesnt come with the steel spacers that go in the clutch packs. has anyone had any problem reusing them?

a/c seal, is likely damaged the crank shaft too... could need sleeve. any a/c repair shop should have access to the seals for the R4 it's very common.

steels are replaced only if they have been slipping and are heavily damaged. usually they get buffed up with scotch buffers and reused. there is a thickness spec, and of course if they are burned or cracked, they need to be replaced... expect to pay more for the steels than you did for the entire rebuild kit.

I have working gears for both driver's and passenger seats for the w126. They all are tested and known good. I will sell them to you as a per seat set.

Before you buy them though, just go to a junkyard and get new seats from a late model w126. They all fit and are beautifully interchangeable. The newer seats will last longer, are more comfortable (in my opinion) and you are likely to get leather instead of tex when you go.

edit: Yeah, you have to alter the plugs so its not THAT easy, but hey...probably easier than switching out the motors.

81 300SD. My driver's seat had not been working for 2-3 years. I replaced the switch and it would then move all directions except for front to back - which is what I needed. I removed the seat, turned it upside down on the workbench, and put some jumpers from the motor to my battery charger. It started working front to back for some reason. I wonder if it was not just a little rusty, stuck from not working for so long. So I put the seat back in the car and it has worked ever since - about four months now.

Maybe you will be lucky too.

I believe funola had a thread on rebuilding his R4 last summer. There are plenty of links and other info in there. I think there's a Delco catalog pdf link with more parts info than you'll ever need.

i know last year while i had the seat out i was able to get it to move for a short time. i think theres a gear missing some teeth but i havent taken it apart yet. it already has leather so no need to upgrade. gonna hope and pray the steels are in good enough shape to reuse. it has been slipping between gears, so they just may be burnt. guess ill have to get the motorcycle running so when i pull the trans the wife can drive my truck.
