A 240 D gearbox problem .

G'day all ,I've been here before but not for a while ,a new ISP so I had to reregister with a similar user name .

I have a 240 D , '83 model ,a 4 speed manual .She's a good girl but has recently developed a problem which has made my wife refuse to drive her ! I don't find it that difficult , more an inconvenience however it must be solved !

She occasionally refuses to go into gear , just locks up .Sometimes I can get her into reverse ,move her a little then get into first .Sometimes that doesn't work and the solution is to shut off the engine then restart and all is well .

Can anyone tell me whats going on and how to fix it ?

Try pumping the clutch a few times when it happens. If things clear up, you've got a problem in the hydraulic system.

A new clutch doesn't require breaking open the clutch hydraulic system. So it's still likely that you could have hydraulic issues. If the clutch hydraulics aren't creating enough pressure you won't get proper movement of parts and it makes it difficult to shift.

I had some issues in my 240D manual trans that was causing some grinding when shifting. I originally has Redline MTL in the trans, but later found out that it really should have ATF in it. So I drained out the Redline and put in ATF, after a couple hundred miles the grinding was gone, and I've had smooth shifting for 3 years now. Do you know what kind of fluid you have and when it was last changed?

Mine did this over the last month or so, progressively getting worse. A new slave cylinder fixed the issue.
