Ive bought two w123 and both were not what they supposed to be. The first was a shady car salesman off ebay and the second I just dont think he knew as he was flipping it. After I got home it was obvious the whole cluster had been replaced at some point. Granted I never bothered to ask if the miles were correct on either. the fist car was a long way from the promised 160K, the second could have had 700K and I would have bought it anyway......

I'm more concerned tat the speedometer work so I don't accumulate tickets. I know, 0 to 60 in a day and a half but it will cruise at 80 all day. I log my fuel & simply multiply gallons * 25 for maintenance estimate. I write down any parts installed, where I bought them & the install date. Been doing this on all my cars since I learned to drive. It makes for persuasive records when I want to sell.

Most GPS units have a speedometer display. Some have a tracking odometer as well but I learned the hard way that it can be easily reset by accident. That's what i'm using for a 240D speedometer though.

Many years ago, an Uncle of mine who had a number of classic (CCCA) cars said something about mileage that I've always remembered.

"It's not the miles, it's the condition."

The reason I went out and bought a GPS was to keep track of my mileage, being that my odo hasn't worked since I bought the car. When I did the test drive, I told the guy the odo didn't work. He said that it must of just started because it worked for him. Right. The price just went down.
