1997 E300D no power steering ???
Hello all,
My w210 e300 has almost no power steering. When I purchased it a few years back, it had sat for about 6 months unused. PO stated it worked fine when parked and was a pretty straight up guy, so no reason to not believe him. It does have a wee little bit when at higher rpms but nothing at idle. Pump does not make any odd noises, plenty of fluid, rack is not binding..... just no action. Been driving it like this for 5k miles and no change. Got the other bigger problems attended to, now on to this. What should I look at? Is there any kind of check valve or inline filter in this system??? Is the pump shot? Thanks in advance, Klaus

If the steering pump is like the one used on the W123, there is a filter in the pump under the lid. been a while, but there is a thing to unscrew with a spring under it. lift it off the shaft then there is the filter. lays in there flat. about 1 1/2 inches thick.

Although many sites list a part number, there is no replaceable filter on a W210 PS pump.
If the pump is working, I'd guess the seals in the rack have gone bye bye.

My W124 did not have working power steering when I got it. Previous owner said it had worked well when he put it in storage. After storage of almost 9 years, no power steering. The belt was on, the pulley turning, and full of fluid. But no power steering, not a little ever, just none. Well, when I replaced the engine I soon found out why. The shaft was broken, yet it was long enough to ride in the pump and the belt kept it in place. As soon as the belt was removed, the pulley fell off.

I had the same problem on my w210. When you rev the motor the steering works, but not at idle when you really need it.
I ended up just replacing the PS pump with a used pump that I pulled from a yard. I was lucky because I think the diesel has a different pump than the gassers so they are hard to find used. The w210 does have problems with the PS pump as far as I know. |

Not real familiar with rack and pinion systems, but wouldn't that cause binding in the rack? The steering feels normal, just way underboosted.
