is W123 5 speed cross member specific to the 5 speed?

I thought there was an interchange with a 300D Auto for this cross member but Im not finding it. looks like the one in the bottom picture. can anyone verify the part number is A 123 242 28 01? WRONG the number should be A 123 242 26 01

it's a cross from a 240 auto crossmember.

thats for a 4 speed, the 5 speed trans is quite a bit longer. I have a 4 speed in mine now with the 240 auto cross member and it is different than the one pictured.

I don`t know if you readf Dropnosky`s thread over in STD on how to adapt a 5 spd from a w201 to a w123. here is how he got around the Cross mount.
http://www.superturbodiesel.com/std/thread-how-to-adapt-a-w201-5-speed-to-om616-om617-applications?pid=13658#pid13658

Go down to post# 13 item#2.

I bought a factory one from the dealer. $55, its not really worth my time for that to fab one. I thought about just making one from 1inch tubing but since I can buy it, I just bought it.

There I linked the thread and post #.

I guess $55 isn`t too bad for a new one. I think the 240d auto cross mount from PNP is around $20.

Give us the part#, I may be heading to the dealer for one.

when i had my five speed moved from my 123 280e to my 240/300d we used some cross member I had on hand so I suspect it may have been from an automatic since I had several about....or I guess it may have come from the 280e since the back of the 300 motor and the 280 are about the same distance from the firewall.

I think the wagon auto looks close, but the ribbing was slightly different, not sure if there was something else different

The 240D auto cross member is for the 300D 4 speed swap, absolutely not a drop in replacement for the 300D 5 speed swap

Part number is listed in first post. I will let you know when I get it if it is correct. I got it from the online EPC system

cross member showed up today but I did not have time to test fit it. Looks just like the 300TD ones Ive seen. Anyone have a picture of a 300TD auto cross member for comparison?

It is almost certainly the same part from the looks of it. Check the 4spd conversion threads I remember a picture of one being used backwards.

Im researching this through the EPC. it looks like there is a later 300D/TD auto one, like 83-85 that has that same shape, but it is a different part number.

I believe it is the one in my first post. I wish I remembered what thread I pulled that pic from it is part number A1232422801 rather than A1232422601 which is the 300D/TD 5spd

Is this the thread and picture you were thinking of?

The 4 speed conversion cross member secret.
