Instrument Cluster Problems and Questions
hey all, i just stripped the threads on the oil pressure gauge nut sticking out of the back of my instrument cluster. it's shot, no matter what i try, it leaks as soon as the car is started.
so, my question is, is this nut replaceable? what's the most efficient way to fix this problem? replace the whole cluster? it's the kind with a full sized clock on the right, no tach. can i just replace the whole left gauge (oil pressure, coolant temp, & gas gauge)? the other issue is that this is in a 1978 280CE. how interchangable is this gauge and/or cluster with other w123's? what about sedans vs. coupes? what about early vs. late model w123's? the only difference i've noted is the coolant temp. is in F instead of C. i don't care about keeping everything stock in the cluster, i just want it to work! i know this isn't diesel but it is a w123 and i've owned a couple diesels. and now it's leaking oil like one! thanks!

In my experience on a 1975 115 300d the nut on the back of the gauge is an integral part of the gauge's bourdon tube and can't be replaced. It shouldn't be too difficult to find another gauge in a junk yard or from a MB indy garage.

asfik, all 123's use the same cluster base, but the instruments are different. you MUST keep the speedometer/odo gauge, and the tach needs to either stay, or come from another gasser.
the oil/temp/fuel cluster is the same on all, and can be swapped pretty simply. however, your cluster screws will likely shatter the case when you take it apart, if they are not already shattered, so be prepared, and have some plastic epoxy to reassemble. yes, I have plenty of 123 clusters and gauge sets available.
