Capt Kirk and Diesel Power: Car in TX

There is a '84 300D in Arlington that I would really like to check out but I'm in Atlanta. Bill tells me that both of you are in the DFW area, correct?

Here's the ad for the car

It sounds like a great deal if it's as nice as they make it sound and really is "Like New".

Any chance either of you could do a quicky look at the car for me?

Thumbs up

Great!

Please....keep me informed. Good luck with the Samurai.

Capt Kirk...if you get an opportunity and it wouldn't be an inconvenience to you, I'd really appreciate getting a second expert opinion on this car too....

unless DP comes back saying it's trash and the guy is grossly exaggerating....hopefully not.

Lol, naw I don't need the lunch or even the gas money (thanks for the offer though).

I have no problem going out there around 3:00 on Sunday, I'm checking to see if my friend is willing to go along to take notes, etc.

Is there anything in particular you want me to check? I can go over there with a jack and jackstands and check every inch of the car or I could just say that it's a car with 4 wheels. It's your choice.

BTW, I'm flattered that you consider me an expert

There's not any ONE thing I was wanting to check...mostly just wanting to see if it's as nice as he SAYS it is in the ad. If it is, I'd seriously consider buying it!!

...but that's not to say that I'm not interested in knowing as much as I can learn about the car. I'm just wanting to see if this is just ONE MORE ad that says the car is a 10 then turns out to be a 3.

As far as what all to check...hmm. Well, let's just say I'm wanting a VERY good to Excellent condition car.

Looking for functionality of mech/elec. stuff
Condition of motor-how well it runs-same with tranny
condition of int/ext.
general cleanliness
**maintenance and service records**
NO RUST....as in ZERO, 0, NADA, ZILCH

Basically, everything I'd check if I was there and considering buying the car.

If everything checked out visually/driving wise, I'd prolly have him bring it to a shop for a full inspection.

Certainly bring your friend..heck, bring two or three )
The more eyes you have on that car, the more info I'll get >

Pictures would be AWESOME!

You would HATE my commute then!!

50 miles one way. Paradise(no joke), TX to DFW airport grounds. 5 days a week. This is why I've become so enamored to diesel longevity. I doubt that Capt. Kirk and I would be able to tag team the car. My "weekend" starts @ midnite tonight, and I work on everybody elses weekend.

I'll be sure to take it for a spin around the freeway then

Since I've been dismantling my car I know what to look for (seems like on mine everything except the motor is bad)

Want me to call the guy or will you set up the apointment?

Well...you certainly had me beat by about 10 mi. My daily commute was 40mi. each way.
What exactly do you do that involves such odd work hrs?

Question

Alan,

Not sure about setting up the appt. Do you have any feel for if this guy would be less inclined to 'freely' show a car if I setup an appt from out of state and told him someone else was going to look at it for me....or maybe MORE inclined?
dunno...I'm once again prolly over analyzing the situation...

Overanalyzing these sorts of things is good.

And your right, I should probably setup the appointment. When you call the guy you can be like "naw, I trust ya. Just send it to a mechanic for a proper evaluation"

BTW, are you sure this guy is in Arlington, have you already talked to him?

I monitor the phone switch network for Verizon telecommunications. We are a 24/7 operation and subsequently I work evenings. We bid our preferred schedule, and by working weekends, I get paid time and a half for working Sundays. It makes it nice not having to fight the weekend crowds running errands as well. I've had this shift for a few years now, and would only trade it for one of two other departments here that have an eight days on and 6 days off schedule. Those two areas are tough to get into.
