the 2.5NA, like all diesels have HUGE air flow, and the stock air filter flows plenty. get a manometer and drive the car with stock air filter, and the K&N see if there is ANY difference. the cleanable ability of the K is cool, if you are cheap and cannot afford the 4.00 every 15000 miles or so...
performance improvements in this car with electric fans are negligible. the alternator drain will exceed the power saving from the fan. now, if you could install electric WATER PUMP, and fans, and you were in a race car with no alternator, then power improvements would be measurable. but on the road, and with alternator drain, the difference is not.
synthetic oil, proper balanced injectors and clean fuel filters, balanced fuel pressure, manual transmission with overdrive, adjusted ADA if your car has it... that about tops the performance economy mods you can do.
air dams, body kits, hard skinny tires, aerodynamic hubcaps, floor smoothing... search for hypermiling tricks and tips...

and in my opinion... installing a turbo motor in the N/A car would not improve mileage.
unless all the other changes from the turbo car were done as well.
taller gear ratio, especially.
the N/A's have a lower gear ratio due to their lack of power.

Yes, the 2.65:1 gears of the automatic-transmission turbo car help (and it can still spin the tires).

I agree, once fluids are all synthetic, tires are low-rolling-resistance and well inflated, the underbody panels are in place, paint waxed, A/C repaired so that you can run with the windows closed, injectors and IP balanced, your car will find so much more mileage than running a large fan that the original 65a alternator can't handle.

But do it your way, there is always another method to explore.

Don't get my wrong that is vary good, but the none turbo gets over 33 in town and over 42 on hwy. So I am just saying that it would be pointless to spend over 2 grand to swap a turbo motor. Don't you think?

I just changed the oil, but I got some Lucas oil stabilizer so I am going to drain a qt. out and add it. That will help with lubricating much better anyone else running it in theirs?

I believe the stock alt can handle running the the stock fan, but if you started installing 16+ inch fans you need to upgrade the alt. I am also running a optima battery which helps.

Speaking of upgrading the alt what is a direct replacement upgrade?

Have you had problems with additives in MB diesels?

Lucas is shown to cause cavitation in the motor oil... really bad for the motor.
nothing is better than a quality synthetic diesel rated motor oil.
fresh filter, fresh 5W40 synthetic, tires, fluid changes, etc.
vehicle will sing.

x2...

The only part I have not done is switch over to synthetic oil, only because the oil in my 85 was new when I got it. The first oil change I do I'll be changing. Rotella is in it right now. New tires, filters etc have made noticeable differences. Getting the things like the the rockers adjusted correctly, turning up the boost etc made a huge difference. On my 81 NA, I have have a 83 rear end sitting here waiting to go in for the taller gear.
