Author looks like a real genuis. Of course burning chemicals such as Brake cleaner and Carb cleaner is BAD if you inhale it.

But who knew that burning it in the presence of argon from his welder could kill you in a few days?

Damn, I knew there was a reason I always use the chlorine free stuff. Still, the warning is valid for any chemical. Those warnings really are there for a reason.

This is a rerun that was posted before, or I read it on another forum.

This is one that needs to be brought up every 6 months as we have new members coming along with lurkers on the side reading the forum. may save some one.

Thanks for posting this Greg, I actually forgot about this problem, and I even read it before.

I ran across it at Weldingweb.com....

I use the stuff pretty regularly...not for cleaning stuff which I will be heating..
but carbs on lawnmowers and such.... but totally out in the open air and I am always upwind and holding my breath.. but I am surprised at just how bad it is if the wrong physics are applied to it...

And for those of us that used to clean brake backing plates and stuff by using compressed air... only to find out decades later how bad long term asbestos particles ( which are small enough to fit through a typical shop vac filter and get blown back into the shop ) exposure is.... it seemed like liquid spray Brake Cleaner was a good deal....

The chemicals I've worked with before have given me crazy headaches. A mixture forgetting to eat, over working, and poor ventilation aren't fun.

I wonder why he just didn't use rubbing alcohol? Then again what do I know?

Probably because it is not available in a spray can... or at least I have not seen it that way... and the carb cleaner or starter spray does clean oily greasy stuff fast... and dangerous I now know... LOL

Note in the web page the mention of ' phosgene '

In the MB AC FSM in the safety section 83-504

" d) Never weld on components of closed system or nearby. No matter whether the system if filled with refrigerant or not, heat will lead to over pressure which in turn may damage the system or result in an explosion.

R12, which is absolutely non toxic at normal temperatures, will decompose into hydrochloric acid and hydrofluoric acid when touched by a flame.

Among others, these decomposition products also contain CHLORINE and PHOSGENE.
Since these products are detrimental to health , pertinent care is essential. "
