NSS does not lockout-starts in any gear, no reverse light
Is that a bad NSS or is there an adjustment which may fix the problem? 83 300D turbo.

Funola have a look in the 722.3 ATSG manual - may be there is a bit of information there... you do have access to that don't you?

Sounds like a bad/jumpered NSS. I posted schematics of the pre-/post- 81 NSS in this thread: Neutral Safety Switch Wiring Question
Post 11. Depending on which version of the schematics you have, you can get a different level of detail on how things work. Post 4 is also correct, but doesn't show the back-up light wiring, nor the kickdown switch - also on the circuit, but maybe not actually part of the NSS. It could affect the back-up lights since they share a power line. What happens when you try to start it in D or R? Does the tranny engage and try to roll the car? |

NSS used to work a long time ago incl reverse light. Then shift lever became looser an looser till it was always in forward gear and I cannot select reverse gear. That was due to a missing bolt on the shifter rod at the transmission. I have replaced that missing bolt and can now select all gears incl park but still have no nss lockout or reverse light (note: I also did not have nss lockout before I replaced missing shifter bolt).
If I start in drive or rev, the car moves so I always have parking brakes engaged when starting. Army, got a link? Thx!.

Just behind the shift lever on the NSS is a piece of plastic that fits in to a hole in the shift lever and is what moves the switch mechanism when you shift gears. If the little nub that fits in the hole on the shift lever gets broken off or, in your case, where the shift lever became loose and it possibly comes out of the hole, the NSS won't do it's thing.
I would check to make sure that the plastic piece that does the switching is still being moved by the shift lever. See here where the shift arm from the transmission comes through the NSS. The black plastic piece is the one to check. http://catalog.peachparts.com/ShopByVehicle.epc?q=1981-Mercedes--Benz-300td-Transmission&yearid=1981%40%401981&makeid=63%40%40MERCEDES+BENZ%40%40X&modelid=6230%3AED|10000135%3AMBC|1518%40%40300TD&catid=241185%40%40Transmission&subcatid=241298@@Neutral+Safety+Switch&mode=PD
