There is one of these for sale near me. I've read lots of posts about the "rod bender". I will check it to see if it as had the engine replaced, the current owner doesn't know. It has 198,000 miles on it, should this make me more or less concerned about the possibility of the rods bending? I guess I was hoping that if it made it this far that it would be ok. Is this flawed thinking? It is in pretty good shape, what is it worth?

I've heard various theories on rod bending, as there is lots to read here on that subject. Some of what I've gathered is that replacement engines are less likely to bend a rod, though they can still do it; and that an engine that makes it much past about 150,000 miles without bending a rod is less likely to than one that has yet to pass that mileage range, though they still can.

So to summarize, the car in question may or may not bend a rod at some undetermined time in the future. That help?

All depends on the condition and if it has a 3.5 or perhaps it has been treated to a 3.0 swap. If I were to buy one I would want to only pay enough for it so that if I had to swap out the motor I still wouldn't have too much in it. That said if it runs good and idles absolutely smoothly, no reason you cannot run it until it self destructs. The 3.5 motor has a ton of torque and is decent to drive.

I had one. Nice to drive, excellent ride, and lovely interior.

True.

It seems that every 350SD(L) 126 that I see on ebay etc. is asking more than I'm willing to pay for a possible future project. I'd love to have another one, but people unaware of its rod-bender reputation seem to keep the prices high.

I am just curious as I do not intend to sell. It came with a #22 head put in by the PO and I paid peanut for it. I did not know it is a #22 until as I asked forum members here. For some reasons the front 3 digits of the head casting was machined off. It is a running car but I no-op'ed it as I have too many cars.

A car right on the 200k mile mark is a gamble. It might have one of the factory motors that won't blow up. I'd think if it were a bad one it would be showing some oil usage. I'd still factor in the price of a 3.0 swap into my offer.

All the ones I've seen on ebay scare me. Creampuff bodywork and interiors, but all right around 130,000 miles... right when the rods start to bend.... And they all close for $$$$... but then are relisted a week later

Data points: My own car got a new engine at 150,000 miles. Swapping the 3.0 into the 3.5 is technically illegal, though the only place that would actually check would probably be California. The 350SD is the rarest W126, sold only in the us in low numbers (~1200 as I recall). The next rarest is the europe only 560SE.
