Lucky you. I hope LKQ does the same thing in Florida. They can be pretty sneaky about it.

Lucky you, more like insanely lucky you.

Years ago a couple of us from the frozen, rusty north talked about getting cheap airfares to California, then spending a week alternately relaxing and visiting pick n'pulls... and filling up a freight container with car(s) and parts to bring back.

You have NO idea how different it is up here. Everything is rotten in what passes for PnPs here and they often are so uncoordinated they crush better cars for scrap than they leave out in the PnPs. No planning, just hand to mouth.

Then even if you DO find something on one of their wrecks, your heart is in your mouth when you get to the counter waiting for the price the local yard nazi decides to slap on it.

And I hear stories about places with $50 wheelbarrow days. Oh lawd.

I walked out(more ran out) of an LKQ in Portland once after paying $10 for an 123 M injection pump. Plopped it on ebay, and sold it for $175. It was a good day at the yard. I might have to try to hit one this weekend.

Our local pull n save has 'all you can carry for $xx days'. You have to carry it over a 20' course. Lots of Mexican will bring a yoke and hang engines on either side or an engine and a tranny and grunt along for 20' for a very good deal.

If you can carry and engine 20' all by yourself for then you deserve a deal.

It was a good day in the yard, almost no one there, I guess they all have jobs? at least I didn`t have to watch my tool box as close as I usually do. and there is always someone wanting to borrow a tool. why would they come to the junk yard w/o any tools?

I pulled two sets of chrome cowel vents, 5 of the old blue style door actuators. one R/F window reg and motor. a 3:58 Diff and the instrument cluster with a 150 mph spedo. a 5spd shifter and 5 spd gear box out of a 190E.

I dropped the whole sub frame on the 79 280E to get the Differential. a little more work, but they don`t allow jacks to raise and lower the Diff to get the axles out. this is the second one I did this way, and I am getting a little faster doing it.

Those 190E are a pita to work on. they are so cramped because of the small size. the top 4 bolts are the hardest. need some long extentions to reach across the top of the trans from the rear. this is the 3rd or 4th 190 5 spd I have pulled, and getting better on these too. hate to tell you about the first one I pulled. lets just say, it`s a good thing it got crushed and sent to china.

last car was a 77 300D, 399,992K, and is the nicest, and cleanest rust free car. too bad it is in PNP. think maybe it was donated to a charity. the brown interior was almost perfect. almost nicer than my own cars. I pulled 3 older style door actuators and ran out of time.

I need to replace the rear window on our 240, and this 77 has a good rear glass and defroster. need to read up in the FSM how to remove one w/o screwing it up. maybe just cut the rubber and push it out. I definately want to save the aluminum trim w/o bending it.

Iam always amazed when checking out, these people in the different yards, have a difficult time trying to figure out what a vacuum door actuator is. lady today said it is part of the door lock assy. and called it a door lock solenoid. I told her it is vac operated. I have been charged between $4.95 and $13 for these things. today she charged me $9.95. and said they list for $18, then said they aren`t loaded in their computers. I thought all the PNP yards used the same computer program for their pricing. guess not.

Good day Charlie, you go four more days left!

It's looking like no PNP for me this weekend. Make sure you score enough part for all of us!

You got it. Just cut the rubber all the way around the glass until it just lifts out. Getting one in is a treat. I guess you have never done one. If they are cheap buy a spare in case you break the first one. The tough part is getting the rubber stretched on the glass.

I have removed it twice on our 85, first time back in 98. had a guy at the glass shop tell me to remove the trim first. slide the piece at the top that covers the end back. gently lift up the trim end, slip a cord under it, and start pulling the cord. push down on the trim so it doesn`t curl, pull towards your self and work it towards the end. same on the other side and the lower piece. then I cut the rubber and lifted out the glass.

Doing it this way, there could be a chance of tweeking the aluminum so it won`t fit back into the rubber. It did work for me, and all went back together when installing the glass.

I haven`t installed one, always had a shop do that. except for the last time, had a mobile guy come over and do it. He installed it dry w/o any sealant. asked him about that, and said MB doesn`t require any. rained that same night, and had a very wet trunk. reason I removed it was the trunk was getting damp on the right side. this guy is off my list.

Just read through the FSM of removing one. seems simple enough.

1st version.

1. Unscrew ground wire of back window defogger located in trunk on right hand side.
2. Disconnect plus wire at connector (left in trunk)
3. Remove left and right rear piller trim (68-449).

2nd version

This version is evident by the air flow guide rails on the rear pillar.

4. remove left and right rear pillar trim (68-449)

Note: this is the "C" pillar panel the rear seat belt goes through. be careful you don`t break off the plastic tabs. as I remember there are some metal clip that fit into some plastic pieces.

5. Disconnect electric wires at connector on left and right rear pillar.

Note: be careful with these as they are sort of delicate. don`t want to break the connection to the glass.

6. Slide back rubber frame from inside car with a plactic wedge placed behind spot welded flange of window opening.

7. Remove back window by pressing out carefully from inside of car. be careful not to damage contact wires or side air flow guide rails.

8. remove ornamental frame on back window.

9. Take rubber frame off of back window.

Ok, that sound easy enough.

I know the way PNP is, they would charge for the trim seperately if it was removed. maybe if it is all attached with the glass they will let it go. plus leaving the rubber on the glass will protect the glass while Iam moving it.

You can try that at PNP with their practice glass, if you wish. You stand a high chance of breaking it. If your goal is to get the trim for free, try it, but like I said, the practical way is to cut it out. You are not thinking of reusing that seal , I hope...

And it sounds easy, but when you are pushing that rubber "with a wedge" you will really be stressing that glass.

Amen to that! Over here, the bloody pick-n-pulls are doing the job to every customer that walks in. And woe betide if you go to the only pick-n-pull "specializing in Mercs"...you will be raped. Bloody thieves, the lot of them, if you ask me.

I wonder...is it worthwhile visiting any pick-n-pulls in Washington state? I've got half a mind to drive over the border these days, if the pickin's are good, that is.

Charmalu-

I may be out there with you.

LKQ Florida is doing the 50% off thing too.

I was just in my favorite yard 2 weeks ago, so probably nothing new, but theres another close to work that I need to scout out today.

If nothing else, I may be able to find some nearly new tires for my fleet.
Happy hunting.
